Oregon State Sweeps Vikings in Midweek Doubleheader

The challenge of a Pac-12 opponent proved to be too much for Portland State softball on Wednesday afternoon. The Vikings fell in both games of a doubleheader against Oregon State 4-2 and 8-0 (6 innings), but gave the Beavers' ace a good challenge at the plate and saw some impressive performance from multiple Viking players.

Serafine Parrish had a solid start in the first game, going all seven innings and allowing the power bats from Oregon State to get just six hits off of her. Timely hitting allowed four runs to score, but Parrish did well to limit chances for the Beavers all game.

The Portland State offense revolved around Rachel Menlove in the first game as she scored both runs after leadoff hits in the third and fifth innings. She finished 2-for-3 and scored on RBIs from Darian Lindsey and Jessica Flanagan.

The Vikings tried to execute the sacrifice bunt multiple times in the first game, but struggled to make good contact and advance the runners, one of the only regrets for head coach Meadow McWhorter and her team.

"I was really proud of Serafine in the circle," McWhorter said. "I felt like we had some miscues on defense that put us behind and I thought we had multiple opportunities to score more runs. We missed a chance at a sac bunt, but defensively overall I was really happy with the performance.

"Sala Pedebone did a fabulous job at third base, she really locked down that spot," McWhorter continued. "Riley Casper did an excellent job at second base and Serafine just did a really good job. To five hit a very good offensive team, and to go for seven innings, was really impressive for her."

The losses drop Portland State to 11-20 on the season. They will continue their conference bye week this weekend at the Seattle Invite, where they will play one game Saturday and two on Sunday.

Game One - Oregon State 4, Portland State 2

The Beavers took an early lead in the first game, scoring twice in the first inning on three hits to put the Vikings in a quick hole. Serafine Parrish responded inside the circle and didn't get rattled, rebounding with 1-2-3 second and third innings that put the Vikings right back into the game.

Menlove led off the bottom half of the third inning with a single up the middle, the first base hit of the game for PSU. Marissa Bruno then laid down a bunt that she beat out the throw on, recording an infield single and moving Menlove to third. The Vikings then missed a chance at a sacrifice that would have moved the runners on, instead allowing a strikeout.

Still, they didn't give up on the inning and put runners on first and third after a fielder's choice. Jessica Flanagan then hustled down the line for an infield single that scored Menlove from third. It also extended Flanagan's hit streak to six games.

The Vikings made things interesting in the fifth inning, when once again it was Menlove stepping up with a clutch leadoff double. Later in the inning, with two outs and Menlove on third, Lindsey ripped a single up the middle to tie the game at 2-2.

Oregon State answered in the top of the sixth, with some help from PSU. A throwing error scored one run to give the Beavers a 3-2 lead. In the top of the seventh, OSU doubled its lead and held on by retiring the Vikings in order for a 4-2 win.

Parrish and Mazon, the two starting pitchers, each went the distance. Parrish allowed six hits and four runs, three of which were earned. Mazon also allowed six hits, striking out seven while giving up two earned runs.

The Vikings left five runners on base and have struggled this season on getting good at bats with runners in scoring position. McWhorter said following the game that the team talked about having better at bats in those crucial positions moving forward.

"We need to capitalize when we have runners in scoring position, that has kind of been the name of the game for us all year," McWhorter said. "Really doing our job and when we have runners on, someone has to step up and not try to do too much but just hit the ball where it is pitched and make things happen."

Game Two - Oregon State 8, Portland State 0 (6 innings)

The Beavers exerted some dominance on the Vikings in the second game, combining a solid start from Meehra Nelson with late run support to end the game in six innings. Nelson struck out 11 Viking batters in the six innings.

Portland State struggled to keep up with her speed and recorded just two hits. Bruno and Flanagan were the only Vikings to safely hit, and both of them did it on bunts down the third base line. Nelson's control had the Vikings off balanced inside the batter's box.

Haley Schimmel threw 5.2 innings for the Vikings, allowing eight hits and seven earned runs. Oregon State scored six runs in the final two innings (three in each) to get to eight and secure the run rule.

Despite the sweep, Portland State can take the good from game one and the not quite so good from game two and use it moving forward into the Seattle Invite this weekend. The Vikings will play Santa Clara at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday. Then on Sunday, Portland State takes on North Dakota State at 10:00 a.m. before facing off against Santa Clara again at 12:30 p.m.

"We want to take the challenges from both games and use them to get better," McWhorter said. "We need to battle more, not go down so easy in three swings. We have to expand our at bats and go deep into counts and just keep hammering away."
