A rainy Seattle day may have delayed the start time for Portland State softball on Saturday, but the rain couldn't cool off the Viking bats. PSU recorded season highs in runs, hits, RBIs, doubles, triples, home runs and total bases in a 14-8 win over Santa Clara to kick off the Seattle Invite II.
The Vikings finished the game with a season-high 17 hits, including at least one from every single player in the lineup. PSU also hit a season-high three home runs and Alexis Morrison had the first two home run game by a Viking since 2015. Her eight total bases also set a season-high for the team, but Darian Lindsey and Riley Casper each matched her with eight of their own.
And the superlatives don't stop there. Lindsey recorded the first four-hit game of the Vikings season and also matched her own team-high with her third four RBI game of the year. Casper recorded the first game with two triples for the team this season. The Vikings also had all nine batters, plus pinch-runner Ashlyn Monroe, score at least one run.
But it didn't always look like it was going to be a dominant Portland State victory. Santa Clara started the game with a leadoff home run and added another run in the top of the first inning, jumping out to an early 2-0 lead against Alyssa Burk. They then chased Burk from the game with just one out in the second inning, with Katie Schroeder coming on in relief for PSU. They scored twice that inning to make it a 4-0 game, which was bad news for a Viking team that was 1-15 this season when the other team scores first.
But the comeback started in the bottom of the second thanks to a leadoff home run from Alexis Morrison. The Vikings then put two runners on base for Darian Lindsey, who ripped a two-RBI double into center field to cut Santa Clara's lead to 4-3.
The Viking still couldn't get a stop defensively, however, and the Broncos put up a crooked number for the third straight inning. Despite just one hit in the third inning, Santa Clara scored a pair of runs to jump back ahead by three.
Rachel Menlove led off the bottom of the third inning with a double into right center, but her at bat was followed by two strikeouts. Bruno came up with a clutch infield hit. The throw to first was late and off target, allowing Menlove to come around from second and score to make it a 6-4 game.
In the fourth inning, Schroeder and the Viking defense stepped up to retire the Broncos in order and start to swing the momentum of the game. If the momentum had started to shift after the top half, it had been completely thrown upside down after Portland State's half-inning at bat.
The Vikings scored seven runs in the bottom of the fourth, sending 11 batters to the plate and taking a commanding lead in the game. After a leadoff out, Lindsey smacked a home run into left field, her third of the season. Jessica Flanagan then singled down the left field line - extending her hitting streak to eight games - and then advanced to third on an infield single from Kaela Morrow right behind her in the lineup.
A sacrifice bunt from Menlove scored Flanagan and advanced Morrow to second with two outs, but the Vikings rallied. Tayler Gunesch singled to the shortstop to put runners on first and third again and Morrison hit her second homer of the game to score all three runs.
They didn't stop there. Bruno hit a double - her seventh straight game with a hit - and Ashley Doyle walked, bringing up Riley Casper for her second at bat of the inning. She got redemption after a leadoff fly out, tripling to left center to score two more runs and bring the score to 11-6 in favor of PSU. Santa Clara finally got out of the inning on a Lindsey pop up, but more than enough damage had been done.
The fifth inning went by with scoring from either team before Santa Clara got one run back in the the top of the sixth. Portland State put together another two-out rally in the bottom half of the sixth. Doyle hit a single into center that scored Morrison, and smart base running from Doyle put her on second base.
Casper then hit her second triple of the day, scoring another Viking run. Lindsey brought her home in the next at bat, putting the Vikings ahead 14-7 and just a run short of a run rule. Santa Clara would score once in the top of the seventh, but the Vikings secured the 14-8 win.
Lindsey recorded four hits, Casper had three and Menlove, Morrison and Bruno each finished with a pair of hits. Lindsey's four RBIs led the team followed by Casper and Morrison with three apiece. Doyle and Menlove also recorded RBIs.
The Vikings will wrap up play at the tournament tomorrow with a game against North Dakota State and a rematch with Santa Clara.Â
