Vikings Split Doubleheader, End Weekend with 43 Hits

Portland State softball came up just short of snapping a lengthy winning streak and had another party at the plate on Sunday, splitting a doubleheader against North Dakota State and Santa Clara. Portland State outhit its opponents in both games and once again set season records on offense in a 14-3 game two win.

One day removed from setting new standards in most offensive categories, the Vikings (13-21/2-3 BSC) set or broke season highs in runs (14), hits (19), RBIs (14) and doubles (8) in the second game of the doubleheader and had two solid pitching performances as well.

Darian Lindsey became the first Viking with three doubles in a game this year and once again matched her season high with four hits. On the weekend, Lindsey finished 9-for-13 (.692) with five doubles, a home run and six RBIs. She slugged 1.308 and had a .714 on base percentage, as well as not making a single error in the field while playing shortstop.

The Vikings had four different players bat at least .500 on the weekend and had 10 players with an average above .333. Serafine Parrish picked up a loss, but pitched a complete game while allowing just one earned run against a tough North Dakota State team. Haley Schimmel got the win in the second game of the day, throwing six innings and allowing just three runs.

The weekend totals from the three games for PSU are slightly hard to believe. A team average of .457, 43 hits, 16 doubles, three triples and four home runs. They had 27 RBIs, 77 total bases and a slugging percentage of .819. When a Vikings stepped up to the plate, the chance they reached bas was above 50 percent.

The offense will look to keep its momentum and the pitching and defense will hopefully build off impressive performances Sunday as the Vikings head into a conference series on the road in Montana next weekend.

Game One - North Dakota State 2, Portland State 1

The Bison entered the game red hot, winners of 17 straight. The Vikings were also coming off an impressive performance the day before, setting season highs in nearly every offensive category on their way to a 14-8 win the day before. Something had to budge.

Serafine Parrish threw an impressive game inside the circle, limiting the Bison to just five hits - the fewest in their past nine games - but it wasn't enough. Portland State outhit North Dakota State, but an unearned run following a Viking error set the stage for a game-winning NDSU home run in the sixth inning.

Rachel Menlove picked up the first Viking hit, leading off the second inning with a double to threaten early. A sacrifice bunt then moved her to third base with one out, but the Vikings couldn't push the run across.

In the bottom half of that inning, the Bison put a baserunner on after a Viking error. Back to back singles then brought the runner home, giving NDSU the 1-0 lead on an unearned run.

The Vikings got another leadoff hit in the third inning, with Ashley Doyle reaching on a single into left field. A walk later in the inning again gave the Vikings a runner in scoring position, North Dakota State would escape without further damage.

It was a two-out rally - which the Vikings had plenty of in Saturday's big win - that finally got Portland State on the board in the fourth inning. Kaela Morrow pulled a two-out double down the left field line. Jessica Flanagan then brought her home with a double into left field to tie the game.

North Dakota State regained the lead in the sixth inning with a solo home run, putting the Vikings down by a run with just three outs remaining.

Flanagan led off the seventh with another hit, this time a single up the middle. Doyle followed with another single, putting two runners on with no outs. North Dakota State made a pitching change then as Riley Casper came to the plate. She laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners to second and third.

The Bison walked Darian Lindsey, who had four RBIs the day before, to load the bases. But North Dakota State would escape the jam, striking out a batter and forcing a groundout to end the game, dropping Portland State to 3-10 this year in games decided by one run.

Game Two - Portland State 14, Santa Clara 3 (6 innings)

After torching the Broncos' pitching staff the day before, Portland State once again found plenty of success at the plate on its way to a weekend capping win. On Saturday it was a seven-run fourth inning that helped the Vikings overcome an early deficit on the way to victory. They didn't wait that long to have a big inning on Sunday.

Lindsey led the game off with a double and scored on the next at bat, a triple into right center by Flanagan. Sala Pedebone kept the rally going, doubling into center field to put the Vikings up 2-0. Morrow added another run on a single to right center.

Tayler Gunesch then brought her home with a double into left center and Doyle finished the damage with an RBI groundout. All told, the Vikings scored five runs on six hits, going through the entire lineup in the first inning.

Santa Clara gained a run back in the bottom of the second. Portland State took advantage of a Bronco miscue to add another run in the fourth, going ahead 6-1. The Broncos again chipped at the lead in the fifth, but Portland State put the game out of reach for good with another big inning in the sixth.

The Lindsey-Flanagan one-two punch again struck to leadoff the inning. Lindsey doubled to center and scored on a Flanagan double down the right field line. Pedebone was hit by a pitch, putting two runners on for Menlove. She homered into left, scoring three runs and putting the Vikings ahead by eight.

Morrow then doubled and scored on a Gunesch single into left. She eventually scored on a double from Marissa Bruno, as the Vikings took a 12-2 lead. Lindsey then came back to the plate for a second time in the inning, and again doubled, this time scoring two runners.

Santa Clara added one run in the sixth but it wasn't enough to avoid the run rule. The Vikings won by a final of 14-3 to finish the weekend 2-1 overall.
