FOREST GROVE, Ore. — The Portland State track & field team closed a busy weekend with five event wins at the Pacific Open Saturday at Hanson Stadium.
Â
The Viking women accounted for four of the five event wins, while freshman
Chase Lovercheck won the men's 800 meters for the Vikings.
Â
Kristen O'Handley, who also won the 100-meter hurdles at the Rich Allen Classic two weeks ago, added a second event win during the outdoor season while winning the 200 meters in 24.77 seconds. O'Handley's time beat her previous best in the 200 meters by three-hundredths of a second.
Â
O'Handley also placed second in the 100-meter hurdles Saturday with a finish in 15.10 seconds, and set a new personal best in the javelin for the second straight meet. O'Handley upped her personal best in the javelin by more than 27 feet at the Rich Allen Classic, and she pushed her best another two inches farther with a throw of 88-11 (27.12m) Saturday.
Â
Ceil Dunleavy won the women's high jump for the second straight meet, as she cleared 5-04.50 (1.64m) Saturday. That was the same height Dunleavy won the Rich Allen Classic with, and was just over an inch lower than her PSU best of 5-05.75 (1.67m).
Â
Alana Baldwin-Joiner won the 5,000 meters for the Vikings with a time of 19:06.07, while freshman teammate
Monica Salazar placed second in 19:34.29. Salazar beat her prep personal best with a time of 19:46.81 in her first 5,000-meter race as a Viking two weeks ago, and shaved another 12 seconds off her personal best Saturday.
Â
Angela Mumford added a final event win for the Viking women, as she won the shot put with a throw of 40-02.75 (12.26m).
Â
Lovercheck won the 800 meters for the Viking men in 1:56.33, beating his prep personal best in the event by half a second.
Â
Sophomore
Braden Masanga did not record an event win, but placed second in the men's pole vault with a new outdoor personal best of 14-05.25 (4.40m). That moved Masanga into a tie for seventh all time in the outdoor pole vault, and put him in the top 10 all time for the indoor and outdoor pole vault at Portland State.
Griffin Johnson also set a new PSU best with a clearance at 13-05.25 (4.10m) in the pole vault.
Â
The Vikings will next compete at the John Knight Twilight meet next Friday, April 5, in Monmouth, Ore.
