STANFORD, Calif. — Kaila Gibson may want to run all of her races at 11 p.m. from now on.
Â
Running well after night fall at the Stanford Invitational Saturday, Gibson chopped more than 70 seconds off her personal best in the 10,000 meters, finishing in 34.12.51. The time moved Gibson up to third all time in the 10,000 meters at Portland State, behind only Debbie Myra (33:51.40) and
Sarah Dean (34:00.32).
Â
Gibson's time should qualify her for the NCAA West Prelims at the end of the season, especially considering the final qualifying time in the women's 10,000 meters last season was 34:47.00 – more than 30 seconds slower than Gibson's time Friday. Camelia Mayfield and Amanda Boman, both of whom Gibson passed in the PSU record books with her time Friday, also qualified for the NCAA West Prelims in the 10k with times much slower than Gibson's Friday.Â
Â
Gibson attempted to qualify in the 10,000 meters last season, but a last-second effort to put down a fast time at the Big Sky Outdoor Championships fell short. That attempt was Gibson's first-ever 10,000-meter race at Portland State, and Gibson still finished in 35:24.64 despite running at over 2,000 feet of elevation and being completely new to the event. That performance was enough to give Gibson and assistant coach
Josh Seitz the thought that the 10k was Gibson's new event, and Gibson solidified that with her performance Friday.
Â
Sarah Medved, who qualified for last season's NCAA West Prelims in the steeplechase, will hope to join Gibson with a qualifying time later in the season. Medved finished the steeplechase in 10:42.03 Friday despite running in someone else's spikes and without her contacts due to someone stealing a number of the Vikings' backpacks out of their team van yesterday.
Â
Medved had no other option but to run the steeplechase with her glasses on as a result of losing her contacts. However, the cruel irony is that steeplechase is the worst event to run with glasses on due to the water jump that's guaranteed to get anyone's lenses wet.
Â
Despite all that, Medved's time was still only 10 seconds behind the final qualifying time last season, which was 10:32.40. Medved qualified with a school-record time of 10:21.56 last season, which she set at the Mt. SAC Relays.

HAYWARD, Calif. — Youth and experience shared the spotlight for the Portland State track & field team Friday night at the Mike Fanelli Track Classic.
Â
Seven Vikings set personal bests in their events, with freshman
Luke Ramirez headlining the PB's with his first sub-four-minute 1,500 meters. Ramirez finished in 3:56.34 Friday, the best 1,500-meter time by a Viking freshman since freshman records go back through the 2003 season. Ramirez's prep personal best was 4:00.2, but he beat that by close to four seconds in his first 1,500-meter race as a Viking.
Â
Junior
Andrew Stafford also recorded his first sub-four-minute 1,500-meter time at Portland State while finishing in 3:57.18. Stafford set his previous best at 4:03.46 at the OSU High Performance Meet at the end of last season, but shaved more than six seconds off that time Friday.
Â
Redshirt senior
Alex Cisneros did not set a personal best Friday, but led a group of five Vikings in the men's 5,000 meters. Cisneros – who sat out the entire cross country season and all but one race during the indoor season – showed dramatic improvement over his first 5,000-meter race this season. Cisneros finished the 5,000 in 15:22.87 at the L&C Spring Break Open under two weeks ago, but knocked more than half a minute off that time with his finish in 14:45.81 Friday.
Â
Junior
Jason Rae did set a personal best in the 5,000 meters as he finished in 15:05.38. Freshman
Ian Vickstrom followed with a 13-second personal best while winning his section in 15:11.80. Sophomore
Erik Solano also set a personal best in the men's 5k with his finish in 15:53.97.
Â
Freshmen
Kristen Walker and
Phoebe Jacques set their own personal bests on the women's side of things, as Walker finished the 1,500 meters in 5:07.90 while Jacques finished the 5,000 in 18:01.47. Both times were improvements over their finishes two weeks ago at the L&C Spring Break Open, as Walker knocked 13 seconds off her previous time in the 1,500 meters while Jacques shaved 10 seconds off her time in the 5k.
Â
Sophomore
Delaney White won her section of the 5,000 meters while finishing in 18:24.71.
