NEWBERG, Ore. — Sophomore
Kristen O'Handley had her own mini heptathlon Saturday while the Portland State track & field team opened its outdoor season in earnest at the Rich Allen Classic, hosted by George Fox University, at the Stoffer Family Stadium.

O'Handley won the 100-meter hurdles and placed second in the long jump Saturday while beating her heptathlon personal bests in both events. O'Handley won the 100-meter hurdles in 15.04 seconds – two-hundredths of a second better than her heptathlon best of 15.06 – and placed second in the long jump with a mark of 17-03.25 (5.26m) – close to three inches better than her heptathlon best of 17-00.50 (5.19m).

O'Handley's biggest individual improvement came in the javelin, however, where she set a new personal best by more than 27 feet. O'Handley finished with a best throw of 88-09 (27.06m), crushing the personal best of 61-05 (18.74m) that she set at the end of last outdoor season at the Big Sky Outdoor Championships.

O'Handley was one of four Vikings in the javelin Saturday, with sophomore
Megan Cornett leading the way with a fifth-place finish with a mark of 129-08 (39.53m). Sophomores
Taylor Matsuzaki and
Savanna Milroy also competed in the javelin, and followed with marks of 112-08 (34.35m) and 95-07 (29.15m), respectively.

Ceil Dunleavy added a win for the Vikings in the high jump, as she placed first with a clearance of 5-04.50 (1.64m).

Sophomore
Natalie Cummings placed second in the 200 meters with a time of 25.63 seconds, and also placed fourth in the 100 meters in 12.42 seconds.

Alexis Buckhaults finished in the top five of both the 100-meter hurdles and triple jump with marks of 15.28 and 35-00.50 (10.68m) in the respective events.

Nicole Terry also placed in the top five of the long jump, as she finished fifth with a mark of 16-03.00 (4.95m).

The Vikings return to action next weekend, as they head back to Salem, Ore., for the Willamette Invitational next Saturday.

RESULTS
PORTLAND, Ore. — The Portland State track & field team swept the top three spots in the men's 5,000 meters, and claimed three of the top five spots in the women's 5,000 meters as the Vikings opened the outdoor season in earnest at the L&C Spring Break Open Saturday at the Eldon Fix Track.

Freshman
Drew Seidel led the Viking men's 1-2-3 finish in the men's 5,000 meters, as he finished in 15:13.80. Junior
Jason Rae and senior
Alex Cisneros followed Seidel at second and third, respectively, finishing in 15:16.31 and 15:22.87. Junior
Andrew Stafford gave the Vikings a fourth runner in the top five with a fifth-place finish in 15:24.71 – one second off the personal best he set two years earlier as a freshman at the Bob Larsen Distance Carnival.

Ian Vickstrom followed Stafford at sixth in 15:24.98, while classmates
Josh Snyder and
Luke Ramirez placed back-to-back at eighth and ninth, respectively, in times of 15:31.98 and 15:33.70.Â

Sophomore twin brothers
Andy Solano and
Erik Solano each set new personal bests while finishing 14th and 15th, respectively, with times of 15:54.78 and 15:56.46.

Senior
Kaila Gibson led the Viking women in the 5,000 meters, as she placed second in a time of 16:58.48. Gibson had cracked 17 minutes in the 5,000 meters outdoors just once before, which came last season when she set her personal best of 16:47.04 at the Bryan Clay Invitational.

Freshman
Linnaea Kavulich gave the Viking women a second top-five finisher while placing third in 18:02.87. Classmate
Phoebe Jacques followed at fifth overall while shaving close to 30 seconds off her prep personal best with her finish in 18:11.98. Fellow freshman
Monica Salazar also beat her prep personal best with her finish in 19:46.81.
