Schimmel Gets First Career Win in Day 1 Split

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The Vikings opened the Amy S. Harrison Classic with a doubleheader split Friday in Riverside, Calif. Portland State slugged its way to a 13-8 win over Maryland before falling to UNLV by a score of 9-0 in six innings.

The Vikings' offense exploded for season highs in hits (16) and runs scored (13) against Maryland before racking up just three hits in their loss to the Rebels.

Junior Darian Lindsey continued her hitting barrage to start the season, going 4-for-7 (.571) with a run batted in. She hit safely in both games to extend her hitting streak to 10 games.

The Vikings got on the board with three runs in the top of the first inning against Maryland. Marissa Bruno and Kaela Morrow each reached on one-out singles. Two batters later, Alexxis Ponce doubled in both to give the Vikings the lead. Jessica Flanagan then singled up the middle to drive in Ponce to make it a 3-0 game.

The Terps got two runs back, only one earned, in the bottom of the second off PSU starter Haley Schimmel. Alexis Morrison got those two runs back for the Vikings in the next half inning with a two-run double down the left field line that scored Morrow and Rachel Menlove to put the Vikings up 5-2.

Portland State took advantage of a fielding error to start the top of the sixth, which led to four more runs by the Vikings, including Morrison's first home run of the season, a two-run shot to left. It was also the first home run by a Viking this season.

Maryland came back and scored four runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth to make it a 9-6 game and drive Schimmel from the game. Alyssa Burk came on in relief and got the first two batters she faced to get out of the inning.

Portland State added three runs in the top of the sixth before Maryland came back with two unearned runs in the bottom of the inning to make it a 12-8 game.

The Vikings tacked on another run in the top of the seventh on an RBI single from Flanagan to go up by the final five-run margin.

Schimmel picked up her first career win in the game. She allowed six runs, five earned, on eight hits over 4 1/3 innings pitched. She walked one and struck out two.

Morrison matched her career high with a team season-high four RBIs against the Terps. Ponce tallied a career-high three hits, scored twice, and drove in two in the win.

The bats cooled off significantly in the second game of the day against UNLV. After racking up a season-high 16 hits in game one, the Vikings tallied just three in game two, two from Lindsey.

It was a scoreless game into the third before the Rebels picked up a run off Burk who got the call in game two. UNLV added two in the fourth and two unearned runs in the fifth to go up 5-0 and force Burk from the game.

UNLV added four more runs in the top of the sixth to put the game into run-rule territory. The Vikings were unable to plate the runs needed to extend the game and fell in six.

The Vikings and Rebels will face off again Saturday morning at 11:30 a.m. PT in PSU's only game of the day.
