FAIRVIEW, Ore. —
These Vikings know how to bust some rust.

Running in the 1st annual Viking 'Rust-Buster' – Portland State's new home meet to open the cross country season – Kaila Gibson led the Viking women to a second-place finish with a record-breaking performance in the women's 4k, while freshman Drew Seidel paced the Viking men with sixth-place finish against a stacked field that featured the third-ranked Portland Pilots men's team.

Gibson and the Viking women beat the Pilot women, as they finished with 38 team points, 10 behind first-place Oregon State and 21 ahead of the Pilots. The Pilots came into the meet ranked seventh in the USTFCCCA West Region preseason poll, while the Beaver women were ranked 10th.

Gibson led the Vikings to the win over the Pilots while finishing the 4,000-meter women's race in a school-record 14:08.8. Gibson beat the old school record of 14:12.69 that Kamila Bocian set at the Dave Murray Invitational in 2007. Additionally, Gibson's third-place finish marked just the second top three finish at a cross country race for the Viking senior, following her second-place finish at the 2017 Charles Bowles Invitational.

Gibson's record-breaking performance wasn't the only highlight for the Viking women, however, as the Vikings showed off the depth head coach David Hepburn and assistant coach Josh Seitz were hoping to add with the 13 newcomers they signed over the offseason.

Sarah Medved and Sammy Burke joined Gibson in the top 10 Saturday, and also joined her in the top five all-time at Portland State in the cross country 4k. Medved placed fifth overall – her first top five finish ever in a cross country race at Portland State – while Burke placed seventh to record her first top 10 finish in her first-ever race as a Viking. Medved finished the 4k in 14:19.9 to move her up to third all-time at the distance, while Burke moved up to fourth all-time off her finish in 14:21.2.

Burke's freshman classmate Linnaea Kavulich narrowly missed out on a top 10 finish, as she placed in a dead heat with Portland's Katelyn Schultz. Both runners finished in 14:34.1, but the timing officials gave Schultz 10th place, while Kavulich had to settle for 11th. Still, Schultz was the Pilots' second finisher, and Kavulich nearly beat her as the Vikings' fourth-place finisher.

Sofia Catiglioni placed 14th as the Pilots' third runner, but the Vikings followed with two more freshmen as Hunter Storm and Phoebe Jacques placed 15th and 16th in times of 14:54.5 and 14:56.5, respectively.

Kavulich, Storm and Jacques all joined their fellow Vikings in entering the top 10 all-time in the cross country 4k, as they moved up to sixth, seventh and eighth, respectively.

Sophomore transfer Delaney White rounded out the Vikings' top seven, as she placed 20th overall in 15:17.6. Freshman Phoebe Brown followed right behind her with a 21st-place finish in 15:24.6.

Kristen Walker (15:36.4), Alana-Baldwin-Joiner (15:38.8), McKenna Martin (15:42.7) and Hannah Tomeo (15:45.9) finished in succession at 25th, 26th, 27th and 28th, respectively, to close out the Viking women's runners.

Youth led the Viking men as well at the meet, especially with Seidel placing sixth among the stacked Pilot men's team. Seidel ran with the lead pack throughout the race, and finished the 6,000-meter men's race in 19:00.2. That time moves Seidel up to third all-time in the cross country 6k at Portland State, behind only Zach Carpenter and Michael Biedebach.

Freshman Josh Snyder also finished in the top 10 in his first race as a Viking, as he placed ninth overall in 19:28.7. That moves Snyder up to fifth all-time in the cross country 6k, behind Carpenter, Biedebach, Seidel and Neil Seibert.

Freshman Ian Vickstrom narrowly missed joining Seidel and Snyder in the top 10, as he finished in 19:44.7 to place 12th overall as the Viking men's third runner. Andy Solano, Liam Jemison and Jack Rubalcave followed Vickstrom at 13th, 14th and 15th overall, respectively, as they finished in 19:54.7, 20:00.5 and 20:01.9.

Jayson Maule and Cody Jones finished next to each other at 22nd and 23rd overall in times of 20:25.1 and 20:28.1, respectively. Jason Rae followed at 25th overall in 20:42.7, while Andrew Stafford crossed the line a few moments later in 27th overall with a time of 20:55.6.

Matt Palmer and Chase Lovercheck rounded out the Viking men's finishers at 29th and 30th overall with times of 21:05.1 and 21:26.8, respectively.

The Vikings will next compete at the Cougar Classic Friday, Sept. 14, at the Colfax Golf Course in Colfax, Wash. The men will run an 8,000-meter race at 5:15 p.m. (PT), while the women run a 6,000-meter race at 6 p.m.
