Vikings Drop Series Finale to Wildcats

OGDEN, Utah – Portland State dropped the final game of its three-game series with Weber State by a score of 17-3 in five innings Saturday afternoon in Ogden, Utah.

Weber State got on the board with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first before plating five more off PSU starting pitcher Alyssa Burk in the second. Emma Detamore came on in relief and got the next two batters to get out of the inning with the Vikings trailing 7-0.

Portland State got two runs back in the top of the third. Shae Nelson and Celena Carrisosa led off the third with back-to-back singled to center. Tayler Gunesch reached on a bunt single to load the bases. Alexis Morrison grounded into a double-play but Nelson scored on the play for the Vikings' first run. Kaela Morrow singled to right to drive in Carrisosa to make it a 7-2 game.

Weber State got an unearned run back in the bottom of the third after the Vikings committed a pair of errors to make it 8-2.

The game got out of hand in the bottom of the fourth as the Wildcats plated nine runs, four earned, on eight hits and three Portland State errors to take a 17-2.

Gunesch singled with two outs in the top of the fifth and then scored on a doubled to right field by Morrison to give the Vikings their third run of the game. That would be all that they would get, falling 17-3 via the run rule.

Burk was tabbed with the loss, falling to 2-11 on the year. She allowed seven earned on seven hits over 1 1/3 innings of action.

Gunesch went 3-for-3 with a run scored on the day, while Morrison went 1-for-3 with a double and two runs batted in.

Portland State will travel to Corvallis, Ore. for a single mid-week game against Oregon State on Tuesday, April 18 before hosting Big Sky Conference-leading Montana for a three-game series April 22-23.
