Bats Go Quiet in Twin-Bill Loss to Wildcats

OGDEN, Utah – The Vikings dropped a pair of games to open the series against the Weber State Wildcats Friday afternoon in Ogden, Utah. WSU took the first game 13-0 in five innings before taking the series with a 6-1 win in game two.

The Vikings struggled at the plate against one of the better pitching staffs in the Big Sky. They hit just .205 at the plate with no extra-base hits. Senior IF Celena Carrisosa led the Vikings at the plate, going 3-for-4 on the day. Senior IF Shae Nelson went 2-for-6 and scored the Vikings' lone run of the day.

Portland State (6-27 overall, 4-7 Big Sky Conference) had its best chance to score in game one in the top of the first. Nelson led off the game by reaching on a fielding error by the Weber State third baseman. Tayler Gunesch singled to left to put two runners on.

After the next two batters popped up on the infield, Kortney Craker was hit by a pitch to load the bases. The next batter worked the count full before looking at a called third strike to end the scoring opportunity.

The Vikings got runners on base in each of the next three innings but could not get past second base. PSU went 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position in the game and just 2-for-12 with a runner on.

Weber State (23-13, 7-3) made the Vikings pay for not scoring in the top of the inning with four earned runs off PSU starting pitcher Emma Detamore in the bottom half. The Wildcats added three more runs, all credited to Detamore, in the bottom of the second to take a commanding 7-0 lead.

The Wildcats picked up two more runs on a two-RBI triple, their second of the game, in the third before adding four runs, three earned, in the bottom of the fourth to take a 13-0 lead.

Portland State went in order in the top of the fifth to lose the game via the run-rule. Carrisosa picked up her fourth multi-hit game of the season, going 2-for-2 with a pair of singles.

Detamore picked up the loss after allowing seven earned runs on seven hits over just 1 1/3 innings. She walked two and did not record a strikeout. She fell to 4-16 overall on the year.

Portland State plated its only run of the day in the top of the first inning in game two. Nelson led off the game with an infield single before moving to second on a sacrifice bunt by Carrisosa. Gunesch reached on a fielding error by the WSU second baseman, allowing Nelson to score to put the Vikings up 1-0.

The lead did not last long as Weber State plated three runs in the bottom of the first inning off PSU starter Alyssa Burk. The Wildcats added two more runs in the bottom of the second to take a 5-1 lead.

After the second, Burk settled down and recorded the first scoreless inning of the day in the third, working around a two-out hit. She worked a perfect fourth and worked around another single in the fifth for another scoreless inning.

Carrisosa picked up her third hit of the day with a single in the top of the sixth. She was quickly eliminated on a fielder's choice.

Weber State added a run after a leadoff walk came around to score. The Wildcats loaded the bases with two outs before Burk induced a fly out to center for the final out of the inning.
