Complete Release in PDF Format

FIRST PITCH

Portland State hits the road again this weekend for a three-game Big Sky conference series against the Weber State Wildcats, the defending Big Sky regular season and tournament champions. The series opens Friday, April 14 with a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. MT. The series finale is slated for 12 p.m. MT on Saturday.
The Vikings are coming off a tough, rain-soaked, series loss to the Southern Utah Thunderbirds at home last weekend. Southern Utah took the first game of the series before Portland State evened it up with a 10-1 win in five innings in game two. The Vikings bats fell asleep in the series finale as the T-Birds took the series.
Portland State hit .278 for the series with sophomore Kaela Morrow and freshmen Alexis Morrison and Tayler Gunesch each tallied three hits. Morrison went 3-for-7 with three runs scored, a double, and a team-high four RBIs over the three games.
Freshman RHP Emma Detamore got the start in the first two games for the Vikings. After picking up the loss in game one, Detamore bounced back with a complete-game two-hitter in game two. She allowed just one earned run in the top of the first before retiring the next eight batters.
Detamore has come on of late in the circle. She is 3-3 with a 4.44 ERA during league play. In her six league starts, she has three complete games, including a shutout, and has thrown a team-high 34 2/3 innings.

SENIOR CAMPAIGN
Senior IF Shae Nelson continues to thrive in her final season at Portland State. She leads the team, and is fifth in the Big Sky Conference, with a .381 batting average. Her .429 on-base percentage is seventh in the Big Sky. She leads PSU in hits (37), runs scored (13), doubles (6), and is second in runs batted in (12).

GROWING UP
Freshman RHP Emma Detamore has had to grow up quickly over her first season on the Park Blocks. Over the past two weeks, everything has started to click for the young right-hander. She is 2-3 over her last six appearances, including five starts, with a 2.74 ERA. She has allowed 14 runs, 12 earned, over her last 30 2/3 innings pitched with three complete games. She threw her first complete-game shutout with a two-hitter against the Northern Colorado Bears on March 31.

YOU SCORE, YOU WIN
It sounds obvious but it is worth pointing out that the Vikings are 4-1 when scoring 6-or-more runs in a game this season. PSU is 2-24 when scoring less than six runs.

SERIES WIN
Portland State picked up its first Big Sky series win of the season, taking 2-of-3 from the Northern Colorado Bears at home last weekend. Detamore recorded her first complete-game shutout and tallied a career-high nine strikeouts in the series opener. Burk followed with a complete game win of her own in game two to take the series.

LEADING THE BIG SKY
Through three weeks of league action, Portland State leads the Big Sky with a .313 batting average.

4 FOR SHAE
Senior IF Shae Nelson posted the team's first four-hit game of the season, going a perfect 4-for-4 with a double, two runs scored, and a run batted in against Seton Hall. She added her second four-hit game of the year, going 4-for-4 with a run scored and two driven in against Northern Colorado (3/31).

FIRST WIN
Portland State picked up its first win of the season with a 4-3 win over Rhode Island in the final game of the GCU Invitational on Feb. 26 in Phoenix, Ariz. Not only did the Vikings get their first win of the year, but it was the first NCAA Division I win for first-year Head Coach Meadow McWhorter.

YOUNG SQUAD
Portland State added 11 freshman to the roster heading into the season. The 11-member freshman class is tied for the largest in the country this year.

UP NEXT
The Vikings have a mid-week non-conference game against in-state rival Oregon State on Tuesday, April 18 before they are back home for a three-game conference series against the Montana Grizzlies. PSU and UM open with a doubleheader at the Gordon Faber Recreation Complex on Saturday, April 22 beginning at 1 p.m. PT. The series finale is slated for Sunday, April 23 at 1 p.m.

vs. WEBER STATE
All-Time: Portland State is 17-8 all-time dating back to the 1982 season. From 2010-2013, Portland State won 15-straight games. Since the Beginning of 2014, WSU is 7-2.
Last Season: Portland State took the first game of the series last year, 4-0 behind a complete-game shutout by Karyn Wright. She allowed just six hits and stranded six runners in scoring position. The Vikings outhit the Wildcats 10-to-5 in the second game of the series but stranded eight runners on base, including the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh, to lose 5-3.
