RESULTS

LONG BEACH, Calif. —
Redshirt sophomore Brianna Thompson and sophomore newcomer Alli Valk both advanced to the semifinals of their respective consolation draws Saturday, as they lead the Portland State women's tennis team on the second day of the Beach Tennis Tournament, hosted by Long Beach State University.

Thompson played a dominant opening match of the day, as she only dropped three games to UC Riverside's Tracy Van while beating her 6-0, 6-3. Thompson then faced off against Julia Ronney of Montana in the consolation semifinals of singles flight A. Thompson dropped a close first set to Van in a tiebreaker, and then couldn't challenge the same way in the second set as she lost 7-6 (3), 6-2.

Valk, meanwhile, came back after losing the first set of her consolation quarterfinal match to beat Montana's Bianca Bostrom in three sets in singles flight C. Valk lost the first set to Bostrom, 6-4, but then came back with a 6-4 win of her own in the second set. Valk then closed it out with relative ease with a 6-2 win in the third.

Valk ran into the same fate as Thompson in the semifinals, however, as she lost a first-set tiebreaker to CSUN's Arpe Bagumyan, and couldn't recover in the second set as she fell 7-6 (4), 6-3.

Thompson broke the Vikings' bad luck in tiebreakers in doubles, along with the help of teammate Eszter Zador. Thompson and Zador played a bonus doubles match against Autum Prudhomme and Martina Lo Pumo of Grand Canyon Saturday, and beat them in a 7-4 tiebreaker to win 7-6 (4).

Zador was also one of two players still alive in the main draw of their singles flights Saturday, as she advanced to the quarterfinals of singles flight B with a win Friday. Zador faced off against Sadaf Sadeghvaziri of host Long Beach State in the quarterfinals, but lost in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2.

Junior Ashley Knecht also made the quarterfinals of singles flight D against Anna Romeka of Loyola Marymount Saturday. Knecht advanced to the quarterfinals after receiving a bye Friday, but ran into problems against a loose Romeka, who beat Knecht in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1.

The Vikings will conclude the Beach Tennis Tournament Sunday.
