THE OPENING TIP
A little bit of rest for the weary may be what the Portland State Vikings need as they prepare for a lone game this week at Sacramento State. The Vikings completed a stretch of four games in eight days last Saturday with a home loss to Montana State to go 2-2 over that four-game stretch.
After running and gunning for most of the last two months, the Vikings were shut down offensively in the loss to MSU, shooting only .367 from the field and scoring 65 points in a 71-65 loss.
Now, a week's respite from games leads up to a Saturday night clash with the Hornets in Sacramento. The Vikings (11-7, 4-3) will play three straight on the road over the next two weeks and seven of 11 on the road to close out the conference schedule. PSU is tied for fifth in the Big Sky, but only a game-and-a-half behind first-place Weber State (5-1).
The Vikings beat the Hornets in a Jan. 7 meeting, 83-76, at the Stott Center. Since that time, Sacramento State (6-12, 3-4) has won three of four games. The Hornets are 4-3 at home this season, while the Vikings are 4-5 in road games. PSU has won three straight in the series.
Saturday's game will tip off at 7:05 p.m. It will be live streamed at www.GoViks.com/Live. Live stats are available at www.ViksLive.com.
COMING UP
The Vikings are on the road for the next two weeks. PSU travels to Idaho (Feb. 2) and Eastern Washington (Feb. 4) next week. Portland State will not play at home again until Feb. 9 against Idaho State. The Vikings will be meeting all of those teams for the first time this season.

• Sac State 6-12 on the season, 3-4 in the Big Sky and have won three of four games since last facing the Vikings.
• Sacramento State has improved its shooting in recent games, and now hits at .451 from the field. The Hornets still rank last in three-point percentage (.317) and threes made (5.6) in the Big Sky Conference. Like the Vikings, the Hornets have struggled at the line. COMING SOON: AN ALL NEW VIKING PAVILION
The Peter W. Stott Center will remain the home court for the Vikings in 2016-17 while major construction is underway on the eastern portion of the building. That development will become the new Viking Pavilion, a venue that will seat 3000+ for basketball. A completion date is scheduled for winter 2018. PSU will find an alternate home court for 2017-18 until the new Pavilion is opened.
So, enjoy the current Stott Center while you can. With construction underway on the new Viking Pavilion, the Stott's main gym is in its final season of use. In fact, the gym, the academic center, the training room, and the new weight room are almost all that is left of the current facility.
This season, the Stott Center will be using makeshift ticketing, concessions and restroom facilities. At the end of this season, the gym will be taken off-line and transformed with the remainder of the building into the new Viking Pavilion.
Meanwhile, Pardon Our Dust.

2016-17 SEASON NOTES
• GEVING GETS 100TH WIN: Portland State Head Coach
Tyler Geving earned his 100th career victory at Portland State in an 87-74 win over Texas Rio Grande Valley (12/3). The only other 100-win coach is Sharkey Nelson (162-156 in 12 seasons, 1953-65). Marion Pericin (1965-72) actually won 100 games as Viking Head Coach, however 15 of those wins are not recognized by the NCAA as they came against Canadian universities. Here is a list of Portland State's winningest coaches throughout its 56-year history of men's basketball:
1. Sharkey Nelson, 162-156, 1953-65
2.
• WCC AFFILIATES?: Portland State had a good run against West Coast Conference teams during the non-conference schedule, especially when you consider all four games were on the road. The Vikings lost to their first WCC opponent, Loyola Marymount (78-62), but went on to pick up wins at Pepperdine (91-85), San Francisco (82-78) and Portland (77-75). That made the Vikings 3-1 against the WCC this season. PSU had been 0-6 against West Coast Conference teams the past four seasons.
• SR C Namdi Oknokwo will redshirt the 2016-17 season. SO G
Daniel Davydov is also expected to redshirt as he recovers from a knee injury.
• Portland State is in its 21st season as a member of the Big Sky Conference in 2016-17. PSU won Big Sky regular season titles in 2004-05 and 2007-08. The Vikings won Big Sky tournament titles, advancing to the NCAA Tournament in 2007-08 and 2008-09... PSU's trip to the CollegeInsider.com post-season tournament in 2013-14 was its first Division I post-season tournament other than its previous NCAA trips.
• Portland State was picked to place eighth in the Big Sky Conference Preseason Coaches Poll, ninth in the Big Sky Media Poll (polls listed on page 8 of this release).
• The 18-game Big Sky Conference schedule is unbalanced due to the 12-team membership. Due to the unbalanced schedule Portland State will not host Idaho or Eastern Washington, and will not travel to Idaho State and Weber State.
• This marks the second year in Big Sky history in which all 12 teams will qualify for the post-season tournament. It also marks the second time that the tournament will be hosted at a neutral site; Reno, NV. The tournament takes place on Mar. 7-11 with the top four teams earning first-round byes into the quarterfinals.
• This season Northern Colorado will not participate in the Big Sky Tournament due to a self-imposed ban. That will give the top five teams byes into the quarterfinals.
