RECAPS - DAY 1
GREELEY, Colo. — Senior
Kevin Robinson closed the decathlon with a personal-best score of 6,462 points to finish fifth at the Big Sky Championships Thursday at Northern Colorado's Nottingham Field.
Â
Robinson entered the day second overall, but fell in the standings despite finishing one point off his personal-best second-day score. Robinson stood just 58 points out of third place going into the closing 1,500 meters, giving him a look at a spot on the podium potentially with a strong finishing time. The two athletes directly ahead of Robinson finished ahead of him in the 1,500 meters, however, and Robinson's time of 4:49.66 wasn't enough to catch the others ahead of him.
Â
Montana State's Mason Storm won the decathlon with a score of 6,555 points, as he came out on top of a close race after entering the 1,500 meters fourth overall. The three athletes behind Storm all finished within 25 points of him, while Robinson followed at 93 points off the lead in fifth.
Â
Robinson started the day strongly, as he placed second in the 110-meter hurdles, behind only first-day leader Drew Thompson of Idaho. Robinson finished the 110-meter hurdles in a decathlon personal best of 15.06 seconds, .13 seconds faster than his previous decathlon best of 15.19 seconds.
Â
Robinson stayed in second after the 110-meter hurdles, but fell to third after the discus despite setting an overall personal best in the event. Robinson threw the discus an even 100-00 (30.48m) Thursday, beating his old best by close to seven feet.
Â
Robinson tied another personal best in the pole vault, but again dropped in the overall standings despite another strong personal performance. Robinson cleared 11-05.75 (3.50m) in the pole vault, tying the mark he set at the Pacific Combined Events back in March, which beat his old personal best by close to a foot at the time.
Â
Robinson then came within three feet of his personal best in the javelin with a mark of 150-09 (45.95m), before closing the decathlon with his finish of 4:49.66 in the 1,500 meters.
Â
The rest of the Big Sky Championships will start Friday, with the Vikings getting started at 11:30 a.m. (MT) with the men's long jump. Robinson will also return to action tomorrow, as he'll run in the trials of the 110-meter hurdles at 2:40 p.m. (MT).
