GREELEY, Colo. — Oo-de-lally, oo-de-lally, golly, what a day it was for Portland State's
Kevin Robinson at Northern Colorado's Nottingham Field, as the senior set personal bests in four of five events and sits in second overall after day one of the decathlon Wednesday at the Big Sky Championships.
Â
Robinson finished the day with a personal-best first-day score of 3,514 points, 189 points better than his old first-day best of 3,325, and just 39 points off the conference lead that Idaho's Drew Thompson set at 3,553 points.
Â
Robinson closed the day with his best performance, as he finished the 400 meters in 50.33 seconds, a full 1.27 seconds better than his old best in the event of 51.60 seconds.
Â
Robinson gained 92 points on Thompson with his finish in the 400 meters, setting up what could be an even bigger second day for the Viking senior. Robinson's second-day scores have typically been lower than his first-days, making his strong finish in the 400 meters all the more important.
Â
Robinson started the day strong too, though, as he opened the competition with three straight overall personal bests in the 100 meters, long jump and shot put.
Â
Robinson scored 750 points in the opening 100 meters, as his finish in 11.51 seconds beat his old PR of 11.58 seconds, set at the 2014 Big Sky Championships, and beat his seasonal best of 11.75 seconds by close to a quarter of a second. Robinson then tied for second in the long jump with a mark of 21-05.25 (6.53m) – beating his old PR by close to six inches – and then set his third straight PR in the shot put, where his mark of 34-08.50 (10.58m) beat his old PR by close to three feet.
Â
Robinson did not set a new personal best in the fourth event of the day, the high jump, but moved up to second in the standings for the first time after the event with his mark of 6-04.00 (1.93m).
Â
Robinson and the rest of the decathlon field will resume the competition at 10 a.m. (PT) Thursday with the 110-meter hurdles. The pivotal stretch for Robinson will come after that, though, as the discus, pole vault and javelin follow the hurdles, all events where the field could gain ground on Robinson. The decathlon will then conclude with the 1,500 meters, which will also close the second day of the Big Sky Championships.
