Noah Meucci may be underestimating himself in his Instagram handle. Instead of @eatbigthrowfar, Meucci may want to consider changing it to @eatbigthrowfaracetests. That seems more appropriate after the Portland State track & field senior was named to the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District Team Tuesday.
Meucci earned the academic all-district honor, the first of his career, after graduating this past spring with a 3.60 GPA in environmental studies. Athletically, he moved up to third all-time in the weight throw during this past indoor season. Outdoors, Meucci finished the year ranked third in the hammer and eighth in the discus within the PSU record books.
Meucci is the first men's thrower to earn academic all-district honors for the Vikings, as well as only the fifth men's athlete ever.
CSC no longer separates all-district honorees into first or second teams. Instead, the honor recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the court and in the classroom.
To qualify academically, a student-athlete must be a sophomore academically and athletically, and have at least a 3.50 cumulative GPA. In the case of graduate student-athletes, nominees must have earned a 3.50 GPA as an undergrad and a grad student. Athletically, student-athletes competing in cross country or track & field need to either finish in the top 50 at an NCAA regional competition during the cross country season, or have a top 50 regional ranking in a single event during either the indoor or outdoor track & field season.
Meucci qualified athletically due to ranking 34th in the NCAA west region in the weight throw and 42nd in the shot put during the indoor season.
