DAY ONE RECAP
FOREST GROVE, Ore. — Senior
Kevin Robinson crushed his personal best while winning the decathlon at the Pacific Combined Events Tuesday, beating his old PR by 556 points to finish with a score of 6,274 points and meet the Big Sky qualifying standard in the event.
Â
Robinson closed the competition with decathlon PRs in the final seven events at Hanson Stadium going back to Monday, and beat his previous best second-day score in the decathlon by 397 points Tuesday. Additionally, Robinson's 6,274 points move him up to seventh all-time in the decathlon at Portland State, as well as third in the Big Sky this season. Robinson's qualifying mark in the decathlon also gives the Vikings nine Big Sky auto marks through the first week of the outdoor season, the same total the Vikings met during the entire 2016 indoor season.
Â
Robinson won the decathlon by 149 points over Corban's Jason Bracken, who had led Robinson by 77 points after the first day of the competition.
Â
Robinson got the day started well with a dominant win in the 110-meter hurdles. Robinson finished the hurdles in 15.19 seconds, 1.38 seconds better than the No. 2 finisher in the event.
Â
Robinson then gained 191 points on his personal best over the next three events, as he set new PRs in the discus, pole vault and javelin, typically weak events for Robinson. Robinson beat his old best in the javelin by close to 18 feet, as he picked up 540 points with a throw of 153-03.75 (46.72m) Tuesday. Robinson also beat his old best in the pole vault by close to a foot, clearing 11-05.75 (3.50m) Tuesday, when he had previously only cleared 10-06.00 (3.20m) outdoors.
Â
Robinson's strong performances in the throws and pole vault set him up to go for the Big Sky qualifying mark in the closing 1,500 meters, as he only needed to run 4:54.25 or better in order to meet the standard. Robinson beat that time by a full 12 seconds, winning the 1,500 in a personal-best 4:42.10.
Â
Tuesday's win in the decathlon continues a breakout season for Robinson, who has shaken off the injury bug that had plagued him earlier in his Portland State career to have his best season as a senior. Injuries had kept Robinson from ever completing a full indoor heptathlon before this season, but Robinson shook that off to finish fourth in the heptathlon at the Big Sky Indoor Championships in February.
Â
The Vikings will next compete at the San Diego State Aztec Invitational this weekend, March 25-26, in San Diego, Calif.
