SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. —
Playing its third dual match in less than 48 hours, the Portland State women's tennis team's long opening weekend came to an end Sunday with a 6-1 loss to the Academy of Art at the San Francisco Tennis Club.

The Vikings (0-3) ran out of gas against the Urban Knights (1-0), who were playing their first match of the season Sunday. The Urban Knights, who entered the match ranked 23rd nationally in NCAA Division II, swept the Vikings in doubles, and took five of the six singles matches against the Vikings.

The Vikings and Urban Knights played tight matches at the top of the their singles and doubles lineups, as the match at line one in doubles went to a tiebreaker, while the top three singles matches went to match tiebreakers.

The Vikings lost the tiebreaker at line one in doubles, as sophomore Siena Peri and junior Tracy Dong fell 7-5 in the breaker to the Urban Knights' Annika Schneider and Taisiia Andrieieva.

Peri and Dong also each went to match tiebreakers in their singles matches, with Peri providing the Vikings' lone win at line two. Peri came back from a set down against the Urban Knights' Paula Alcantara in her match, as she fell behind after Alcantara won the first set, 6-4. Peri bounced back with a 6-3 win in the second set, however, and then controlled the match tiebreaker, winning 10-4.

Peri's win gives the sophomore her school-record 10th career win at line two at Portland State, just barely into her second year at the school. Peri passed Denise Cockrell in setting the new school record, after Cockrell won nine matches in her one year in the program in 2003.

Dong, meanwhile, went up a set with a 6-4 win in the first set of her match against the Urban Knights' Michelle Dandik at line three, but a late break gave Dandik the second set, 7-5, and then Dandik pulled out a close match tiebreaker, 11-9.

Redshirt senior captain Dané Vorster also lost a close match tiebreaker in her match against Andrieieva at line one. Vorster pulled out a tiebreaker in the first set of their match, 7-4, but dropped a close second set, 6-4, as well as an equally close match tiebreaker, 10-8.

The Vikings will now look to bounce back as they open their 2016 home schedule against South Dakota State and Southern Utah next weekend. The Vikings host South Dakota State Friday at 9 a.m. (PT) at Club Green Meadows in Vancouver, Wash., and will return to Club Green Meadows for their Big Sky opener against Southern Utah Saturday at 12 p.m. (PT).

Match Notes: The Vikings and Urban Knights were facing each other for the first time Sunday…Besides holding the school record for wins at line two, Peri also ranks second all-time in win percentage at line two, as she has a 10-10 record all-time at the position.
