Vikings Stay Hot with 5-2 Win over Redhawks

BOX SCORE - PDF | HTML

VANCOUVER, Wash. —
The Portland State men's tennis team can do no wrong at the moment, and Saturday was no different as the Vikings picked up a quality 5-2 win over a Seattle team that had given them fits in recent years at Club Green Meadows.

The Vikings had lost two straight matches to Seattle over the past two seasons, but the Vikings had no intention of letting the Redhawks extend that win streak to three, as the Vikings claimed the doubles point as well as the top four matches in the singles lineup.

"Today was a solid early season win against a very deep Seattle U team, especially considering we played the match without Scott Goldner, who had been played No. 2 singles and doubles for us," PSU head coach Toby Krauel said.

Without Goldner, the rest of the Vikings, save No. 1 singles player Nathan Boniel, had to play a line up from their usual spots. Still, the Vikings had no issues, starting in doubles where the Vikings dominated at lines one and two, winning 6-2 and 6-1, respectively.

The Vikings continued their dominant play in singles, none more so than Boniel, who played about as good as anybody could expect in a 6-0, 6-0 drubbing of Seattle's Ian Clare at line one. Boniel also won his doubles match 6-1 with partner Wil Cochrane at line two, meaning the sophomore transfer only dropped one game to the Redhawks across three total sets of singles and doubles.

Additionally, Boniel dropped only one game in his singles match against Lewis-Clark State's Quentin Wacquez on Friday, meaning Boniel won 24 of the 25 games he played in singles this weekend.

Junior Ethan Lopez also wrapped up a quick 6-3, 6-0 win over Seattle's Matt Alderson at line three, giving him his second straight victory after he also beat Lewis-Clark State's Andres Bustani 6-1, 6-1 at line four on Friday.

Senior Wil Cochrane, meanwhile, gave the Vikings their dual-clinching fourth point of the match, as he ran away from Seattle's Michael Schoettler in the second set at line four after pulling out a tiebreaker in the first. Cochrane beat Schoettler 7-6, 6-2 Saturday, giving the senior his 16th singles win at Portland State, and moving him into sole possession of sixth place all-time at the school.

Senior Brent Wheeler followed with the Vikings' fifth point of the match, as he came back after a disappointing first set to beat Seattle's John Stormans 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 at line two.

"Brent lost the first set after leading 4-1, but played a great all-court game and his half-volleys were the best I have seen from him in three years," Krauel said. "He is a senior captain and played like it this weekend."

Wheeler's win over Stormans, who has also played at line one at times for Seattle this season, gave the senior his highest win in the singles lineup since he played at line one during the 2014 season. Wheeler's win also gave the senior 17 singles victories in his Portland State career, 11 wins behind all-time leaders Chris Rice and Alex VanDerschelden, who each won 28 matches in their careers.

The Vikings will now take considerable momentum into their next match, which will come at Lewis & Clark Thursday at 6:30 p.m. That match will lead into the Vikings' Big Sky opener next Saturday, when the Vikings will host Northern Arizona at 5 p.m. at Club Green Meadows.

Match Notes: The Vikings improve to 6-3 all-time against Seattle with Saturday's victory…Boniel, Wheeler, Lopez and Cochrane all finished the weekend 4-0 between their singles and doubles matches against Lewis-Clark State and Seattle this weekend…Lopez now has a 13-9 career record in singles at Portland State, giving him the all-time lead in overall singles win percentage with a career mark of .591.
