EUGENE, Ore. – For the second straight season, sophomore
Alex Cisneros was the fastest Portland State men's runner at the Bill Dellinger Invitational at the University of Oregon. Cisneros and the Viking men finished third with 85 points, coming in behind first-place Oregon (15) and Gonzaga (46).
Â
The Portland State women likewise placed third, tallying 78 points, behind the Ducks (23) and Bulldogs (35). Senior
Amanda Boman finished 13th overall to lead the Vikings.
Â
Cisneros finished 17th individually on the men's side with a mark of 25:50.9. In last season's race on the same course – Pre's Trail at Alton Baker Park – Cisneros placed 26th. He was 12 seconds faster this time around.
Â
Individual improvement was a common theme throughout the lineup for the Vikings. Senior
John Talik followed Cisneros' lead as the Vikings' second runner, taking 21st place at 26:06.6, over a minute faster than his time at the same meet last season. The Viking men also earned points from
Aaron Campbell (25th; 26:40,
Neil Seibert (28th; 26:51),
Ricky Castillo (30th; 27:28) and
Ben Richardson (31st; 27:53), with Seibert and Castillo bettering their times from a season ago as well. Additionally, sophomores
Justin Wikler and
Jacob Hicks beat their times from last season's Bill Dellinger Invitational, as they finished in 28:29 and 29:06, respectively.
Â
The Viking women also showed vast improvement over their marks from last season, especially Boman, who finished dead last at the meet last season, but shaved close to two minutes and 45 seconds off her time this year to finish as the Vikings' top runner in 22:05.8. Junior
Cheryn Trapp (22:20.4) and sophomore
Sarah Medved (22:22.3) also beat their times from last year while finishing 15th and 16th, respectively. Medved's time of 22:22.3 beat her time from 2014 by 100 seconds. Freshman Kaila Gibson, meanwhile, cracked the top 20 in her debut as a Viking, finishing at 23:02.6 as the Vikings' fourth runner.
Â
Portland State's next finishers were freshmen
Jocelyn Reynolds (23:34.) and
Nevina De Luca (23:37). Juniors
Maggie Coleman (24:30.2) and
Keikoanne Hollins (25:34.5) rounded out the race for the Vikings.
Â
The Bill Dellinger Invitational marked the first time the Vikings ran full teams of their top runners. They are back in action on Sept. 19 at the Sundodger Invitational, hosted by the University of Washington in Seattle.
