COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — The Portland State women's tennis team swept past Colorado College, 7-0, Friday, winning all six singles matches and all three doubles matches at Lifetime Fitness.
Â
The win puts the Vikings back over .500 at 6-5 for the season, and gives the Vikings a boost as they return to Big Sky play with a match against fellow 2014 Big Sky Tournament team Northern Colorado Saturday at 10 a.m. (MT) in Greeley, Colo.
Â
"We got what we needed out of today," head coach
Jay Sterling said. "We got some work in at altitude ahead of our big conference match against Northern Colorado tomorrow.
Â
"I also really appreciated [Colorado College head coach] Anthony [Weber] being so accommodating with the schedule change," Sterling said.
Â
The Vikings and the Tigers (1-1) were scheduled to play Saturday, but had their match moved up a day due to a schedule change regarding the Vikings' match against Northern Colorado. Consequently, the teams played singles first Friday, which the Vikings cruised through, winning five of the six matches in straight sets.
Â
Freshman
Siena Peri, sophomore
Tracy Dong and senior
Megan Govi all won in straight sets for the Vikings, giving all three players their third straight singles win. Peri got things started for the Vikings, as she beat the Tigers' Mary Edman 6-2, 6-1 in the first completed match of the dual. Dong, meanwhile, followed with a 6-1, 6-1 win over the Tigers' Natalia Dellavalle at line three, while Govi did not drop a game while beating the Tigers' Maddie Cahill-Sanidas 6-0, 6-0 at line five.
Â
Dong's win at line three gives her seven wins at the position this season, putting her just win away from tying the single-season record for wins at line three, which teammate
Kelsey Frey set with eight wins in 2013. Dong's win also gives the sophomore her ninth win in 11 total matches during the dual season, raising her win percentage this season to .818, which would set a single-season record if the season ended today. Yuki Sugiyama set the single-season record for win percentage at .765 with a 13-4 record in 2011.
Â
Senior
Alexa McDonald also made history Friday, as she beat the Tigers' Gillian Hyde 6-0, 6-2 at line six, giving McDonald her 27th career win at Portland State. With 27 wins, McDonald moves into a tie for second all-time at Portland State with Leinani McAneney (1996-98) and Marti Pellicano (2010-13).
Â
Junior Dané Vorster and sophomore
Sabina-Elena Preda, meanwhile, used Friday's victories to exorcise some recent demons, as each player entered Friday riding losing streaks.
Â
Vorster had to mount a comeback to end her losing streak, however, as she dropped the first set of her match against the Tigers' Fiona Cerf at line one, 6-4. Vorster was down 3-4 in the second set, too, but won the final three games to take the set, 6-4, and level the match at a set all. Vorster again fell down 1-5 in the ensuing match tiebreaker, but roared back one more time, winning nine of the final 12 points in the breaker to take the match, 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-8). Vorster's win snaps a four-match losing streak for the former All-Big Sky first-team selection, as she had not won since winning a three-set match at Seattle University on Feb. 13.
Â
Preda, meanwhile, snapped a two-match losing streak with her 6-1, 6-2 win over the Tigers' Maggie Harwood at line four. Preda's win marks a return to form for the sophomore, as she had mounted a five-match winning streak before losing her two singles matches last weekend.
Â
The Vikings continued their hot play in doubles as well, as the Vikings' three doubles teams lost a total of three games combined to the Tigers. Friday's wins marks just the third time the Vikings have won all three doubles matches through 11 matches this season, and raises their doubles-point record to 5-6.
Â
Vorster and Peri got things going for the Vikings in doubles with a 6-2 win over Edman and Cerf at line one, while Dong and Preda followed suit with a 6-0 win over Harwood and Cahill-Sanidas at line two. Govi and Frey, meanwhile, posted a 6-1 win over Dellavalle and Hyde at line three, giving Frey her 19th career doubles win at Portland State and moving her into a tie for sixth all-time with McAneney and Katie Slizewski (2002-03). Additionally, the win gives Govi her 32nd career doubles wins, pushing her two ahead of Anya Dalkin (2008-11) for the all-time lead at Portland State.
Â
The Vikings will hope to carry their momentum into their match against the Bears Saturday, which will be a critical match for both teams, as they both stand one match below .500 in Big Sky play going into it. The Vikings are currently 2-3 in Big Sky play, while the Bears are 1-2, as each team seeks a return trip to the Big Sky Tournament at the end of the season.
