Vikings Set to Host First Home Meet Since 2000 with Rose City Preview Saturday

Complete meet notes (PDF)

PORTLAND, Ore. —
For the first time since 2000, Portland State will host an outdoor track meet, as thanks to a collaboration with the University of Portland, the Vikings will serve as co-hosts of the Rose City Preview Saturday at Earl Klapstein Stadium on the campus of Mt. Hood Community College.

The meet, which PSU assistant coach Jonathan Marcus and UP assistant coach Chad Colwell co-organized, will serve as a replacement to the now extinct Oregon Preview, which had been a regular early-season meet for local schools at Hayward Field in Eugene.

"Putting this collaboration together with the University of Portland and Concordia enables us and the other schools to have something that everyone can be a part of at a local track," PSU head coach Ronnye Harrison said about the motivation behind the meet. "We needed something for us to get to that wasn't that far away. I'm hoping that this is the start of a relationship where we'll have this meet every year, and it will continue to grow."

Already in its first year, the meet has drawn entrants from Portland State, Portland, Seattle, Seattle Pacific, Western Washington, Western Oregon, Concordia, Warner Pacific, Northwest Christian, Northwest University, Lane Community College and Mt. Hood Community College.

For the Vikings, though, the early-season home meet will also help the team shake off the rust from a tough end to the indoor season. The Vikings' distance crew already shook off the rust at the team's outdoor season opener at the Linfield Erik Anderson Memorial Icebreaker two weekends ago, but Saturday's meet will give the rest of the team a chance to make their outdoor season debuts.

"The Rose City Preview's a meet where people can go out and get the rust out. Everybody's going to still be under load from lifting and so forth, and I don't really look for any groundbreaking news. If people have PRs, I'm going to be extremely happy; if they don't, I'm going to be extremely understanding," Harrison said.

For a lot of Vikings, this will be their first action since a disappointing showing at the Big Sky Indoor Championships in Flagstaff, Ariz., at the end of February. Harrison had hoped his women's team would challenge for the Big Sky title at that meet, but the team fell into a tie for fourth instead.

"Going into the finals day [at the indoor meet], there were a lot schools that thought, 'okay, now Portland State is going to take over.' And we didn't," Harrison said. "We just did not execute as a team the things we need to do, and that's got to change for outdoor."

Senior Jazmin Ratcliff should lead a strong outdoor season for the Vikings' women's sprinters, as she's coming off a Big Sky title and a school record in the indoor 60-meter hurdles. Ratcliff also won the Big Sky title in the outdoor 100-meter hurdles last season, and came within a tenth of a second of qualifying for the national meet in the event, where she will hope to qualify by the end of her final season as a Viking.

Besides Ratcliff, sophomores Akayla Anderson and CeCelia Jackson will also hope to give the Vikings some depth in the hurdles this season, after they combined with Ratcliff to score 22 points in the 60-meter hurdles at the indoor meet. Anderson placed second to Ratcliff in the 60-meter hurdles, while Jackson placed fifth. Jackson had the top qualifying time in the prelims of the event, however, as she beat Ratcliff's school record in the event, only to see Ratcliff reclaim the record in the finals.

Outside of the hurdles, senior Jasmine Woods and sophomore Genna Settle should anchor a talented group of sprinters that will also include Ratcliff at times during the season. Woods placed second in the 60 meters at the indoor meet, while Settle placed third in the 200 meters.

Harrison said the Vikings will need to score more points outside of the sprints in order to compete for a title during the outdoor season, however, as 52 of the women's team's 68 points at last month's indoor meet came from the sprints.

The Vikings' distance crew should be poised to help out more, as things open up during the outdoor season. The Viking women's cross country team saw historic success during the cross country season, and will return senior Camelia Mayfield for her final outdoor season. Mayfield led the Vikings during the cross country season in the fall, though junior Amanda Boman challenged her at times, and was the Vikings' top distance runner during the recent indoor season.

Freshman Gwyneth McMorris also had an impressive outdoor debut at the Linfield Icebreaker two weekends ago, as she edged Mayfield in both the 800 and 1,500 meters at the meet.

On the men's side, the Vikings will be eager to prove their last-place finish at the indoor meet was a fluke. Junior Sheldon Prince scored in both the 200 and 400 meters at the meet, but should be poised for better success in the outdoor season, where he was an All-Big Sky performer in the 400 meters last season.

The Viking men will also get a couple athletes back from injuries that held them out of the team's indoor season.

"I don't take last place well," Harrison said. "I'm certainly pushing my guys harder, that I have specifically, and I'm pushing the guys harder as a team to do way better this outdoor season."

The Vikings will get started at the Rose City Preview at 10 a.m. (PT) Saturday with the women's discus. The Vikings will then get started on the track at 12:05 p.m. with the women's 4x100-meter relay.

LINFIELD ERIK ANDERSON MEMORIAL ICEBREAKER RECAP:
The Viking distance crew led Portland State at the season-opening Linfield Erik Anderson Memorial Icebreaker in McMinnville, Ore., on March 6-7. The Vikings hit five Big Sky qualifying marks at the meet between three marks in the women's 10,000 meters and two in the men's 800 meters. Senior Camelia Mayfield led the Vikings' three qualifiers in the women's 10,000 meters, as she placed second in the event in 36:00.94. Sophomores Maggie Coleman and Cheryn Trapp followed Mayfield with qualifying marks of their own, as Coleman placed fifth in 36:32.11, while Trapp placed ninth in 37:40.11. Sophomore Nathan Fleck and junior T-Roy Brown, meanwhile, qualified in the men's 800 meters while placing first and second, respectively, in the event. Fleck won the event in 1:52.82, while Brown placed close behind in 1:53.06.

BIG SKY QUALIFIERS:
Five Vikings have already qualified for the Big Sky Championships after the team's first meet of the season. Qualifying marks assure the athlete of competing at the conference meet in Cheney, Wash., from May 13-16, while the rest of the field for each event will follow the descending order list for each event. The top 20 in each event qualify for the meet, except in the combined events, where the top 16 qualify.

2015 INDOOR SEASON RECAP:
The Vikings had a somewhat disappointing end to what had been a highly successful indoor season at the Big Sky Championships in Flagstaff, Ariz., at the end of February. The Viking women had hoped to challenge for a Big Sky title at the meet, but placed tied for fourth instead, while the men finished last with eight total points. Senior Jazmin Ratcliff still led an impressive showing from the Vikings in the 60-meter hurdles at the meet. The Vikings scored 22 points in the meet, highlighted by Ratcliff, who won the event in a school-record 8.33 seconds. Sophomore Akayla Anderson placed second behind Ratcliff to earn All-Big Sky honors in the event as well, while senior Jasmine Woods and sophomore Genna Settle also earned All-Big Sky honors with second- and third-place finishes in the 60 and 200 meters, respectively. The Vikings also had several standout performances during the indoor regular season, as the Viking women won four Big Sky Athlete of the Week honors during the season. Ratcliff won two in a row at the start of the season, while junior Sydney Johnson and sophomore Genna Settle followed with their first career athlete of the week honors over the next two weeks. The Vikings also set two new school records at the UW Invitational, as junior Amanda Boman broke the record in the women's 5,000 with her time of 17:01.73, while the Viking men's distance medley relay team broke a 10-year-old record with their time of 10:05.11 in the event.
