VANCOUVER, Wash. — The Portland State women's tennis team recorded a clean sweep of Lewis & Clark Friday at Club Green Meadows, winning all three doubles matches and all six singles match for a 7-0 win over the Pioneers.
Â
Friday's win levels the Vikings' record at 2-2 as they open Big Sky Conference play Saturday against Montana State.
Â
The Vikings got the brooms out early against the Pioneers (0-1), as they took all three doubles matches at the start of the match. Sophomores
Tracy Dong and
Sabina-Elena Preda cruised to a 6-0 victory over Lewis & Clark's Kacey Incerpi and Christine Eliazo at line two, while senior
Megan Govi and sophomore
Kelsey Frey followed with a 6-3 win over Lewis & Clark's Claudia Lew and Summer Garrison at line three.
Â
Govi's win with Frey at line three gives the senior 29 doubles wins in her Portland State career, putting her one win from tying Anya Dalkin (2008-11) for the all-time lead in doubles wins at Portland State. Govi is already the all-time leader in singles wins, having set the mark last season.
Â
Junior Dané Vorster and freshman
Siena Peri had a tougher go against Lewis & Clark's Aurora Garrison and Wiktoria Plawska at line one, running out to a 5-0 lead only to have Garrison and Plawska get back on serve at 5-4. Vorster and Peri recovered in time to break Garrison and Plawska at 5-4, however, giving them the match, 6-4.
Â
The Vikings followed with more dominant performances in singles, as five of the team's six players won in straight sets. Peri and Preda only dropped a game each in their matches at lines two and four, respectively, as Peri beat Garrison 6-0, 6-1, while Preda beat Lew 6-1, 6-0.
Â
Govi also only dropped one game while winning her first set against Lewis & Clark's Glenna Gee-Taylor, 6-1, at line six, and led 2-0 in the second set of their match when Gee-Taylor was forced to retire.
Â
Vorster and Frey, meanwhile, remained in control of their matches throughout, with Vorster beating Lewis & Clark's Summer Garrison 6-3, 6-3 at line one, while Frey beat Incerpi 6-3, 6-2 at line five.
Â
Dong had the toughest go of any of the Vikings in singles, as she dropped the first set of her match against Plawska, 6-3, at line three. Dong came back with dominant performances in the second and third set, however, and won the match 3-6, 6-2, 6-1. Dong's win improves her team-leading dual season record to 3-1, and gives the sophomore newcomer her sixth win in her past seven matches.
Â
Dong and the Vikings will now hope to carry their momentum into their match against the Bobcats Saturday, which will be a rematch of the teams' Big
Sky Quarterfinal match at last season's conference tournament. The Vikings won that match, 4-2, avenging the Bobcats' 7-0 win over the Vikings in the regular season.
Â
The Vikings will host the Bobcats at Club Green Meadows at 5 p.m.
