PORTLAND, Ore. — The Portland State men's tennis team dropped a tough match against its cross-town rival Saturday, losing 7-0 to the University of Portland at West Hills Racquet and Fitness Club.
Â
The Vikings (2-4) faced an uphill battle against the Pilots (3-0), as they were shorthanded in singles with regular No. 2 singles player
Stuart Tierney out with an injury. The rest of the Vikings had to play a line up from lines two through six because of that, and faced a well-rested opponent in the Pilots that hadn't played in three weeks.
Â
Despite the adversity, the Vikings challenged at the top of the singles lineup, starting with sophomore
Ethan Lopez, who made his third appearance at line one for the Vikings. Lopez played a couple of tight sets against Portland's Reid Delaubenfels, but ultimately lost 6-4, 6-3.
Â
Junior
Brent Wheeler also fought through a couple of close sets in his match against Portland's Steffen Dierauf at line two. Wheeler, who was making his first appearance this season at line two for the Vikings, challenged Dierauf in both sets, but still lost 6-3, 6-4.
Â
Additionally, juniors
Matt Pronesti,
Wil Cochrane and
Ian Risenhoover battled tightly in the first sets of their matches at lines three, four and five, respectively, before faltering in the second set. Pronesti lost a tight first set against UP's Mathieu Garcia, 6-4, at line three, but then lost the second set to Garcia, 6-1. Risenhoover fell by the same score to Pierre Garcia at line five, while Cochrane lost 6-3, 6-1 to UP's Michail Pervolarakis at line four.
Â
Junior
Nate Chart, meanwhile, made his first appearance in the Vikings' singles lineup at line six Saturday, and lost 6-0, 6-0 to UP's Jared Madison.
Â
The Pilots also swept the Vikings in doubles, handing the Vikings their first doubles-point loss since their season opener against then-No. 64 Washington on Jan. 10.
Â
The Vikings will now look to rebound in their next match, as they host Montana in a Big Sky match on Feb. 21. The Vikings will host the Grizzlies at 2 p.m. at Club Green Meadows in Vancouver, Wash.
Â
Match Notes: The Vikings fall to 0-8 all-time against Portland with Saturday's loss…Despite losing the doubles points, the Vikings are still 4-2 in doubles points so far this season.
