THE OPENING TIPWithout looking too hard, the irony of Portland State's Big Sky Conference opening game reveals itself. The Vikings host Sacramento State this Saturday night at the Stott Center in their 20th tour of the Big Sky. It will be a cold reminder of last year's conclusion for PSU.
Formerly, the Hornets were a team that Portland State had great success against, as PSU won 25 of 36 meetings over PSU's first 18 years in the league. But last season, a vastly upgraded Sacramento State program swept the Vikings in three games - including a Big Sky Tournament quarterfinal - on the way to its best Division I season ever (21-12).
Last season's sweep also showed that Sacramento State held some power over the Vikings, limiting Portland State to 60 points in all three meetings. The Vikings averaged 75.9 points in all other Big Sky games. Moreover, the Hornets have won four straight in the series, five of the last six, and in their last two appearances at the Stott Center.
So if the Vikings want to make waves in the Big Sky Conference in 2016, they will need to do so right away, against a team with the best preseason winning percentage of any in the Big Sky (.636), and one that had the Vikings' number last season.
Portland State completed non-conference play at 4-7, winning 89-82 over Cal State Fullerton on Tuesday night. It was the Vikings' best performance in a month, ending a five-game losing streak. Five players scored in double figures, led by 21 points from SO F
Isaiah Pineiro. PSU shot .526 from the field and limited its turnovers - a problem-area previously - to 10.
Sacramento State was 7-4 during non-conference play after starting out 4-0.
PSU is 3-2 at home, while the Hornets are 2-3 on the road.
Saturday's game is a 7:05 p.m. tip. Live video, audio and stats can be found at GoViks.com by clicking on the Game Day box.

• The 18-game Big Sky Conference schedule is unbalanced due to the 12-team membership. The Vikings will not travel to Northern Arizona and Southern Utah this season, and will not host North Dakota and Northern Colorado.
• This marks the first year in Big Sky history in which all 12 teams will qualify for the post-season tournament. It also marks the first time that the tournament will be hosted at a neutral site; Reno, NV. The tournament takes place on Mar. 8-12 with the top four teams earning first-round byes into the quarterfinals.
• The Vikings are 9-10 all-time in the tourney.

Braxton Tucker has missed the entire season while recovering from a knee injury.

HANDLE IT!: Turnovers have been a concern for Coach
Tyler Geving this year. The Vikings were averaging 14.5 turnovers per game before making only 10 in the win over Cal State Fullerton. Last season, the Vikings averaged 11.1 turnovers per game... the high turnover total is one reason Geving has inserted GR G
Donivine Stewart into the starting lineup at point guard. Stewart has only six turnovers this season.
A DIFFERENT LOOK: Head Coach
Tyler Geving has started his sixth different lineups in 11 games. The only constant has been SR C
Collin Spickerman who has started every game. Eight different players have started games and those players average between 16 and 26 minutes per game... the past two games, Geving has started
Donivine Stewart,
Calaen Robinson,
Bryce White,
Isaiah Pineiro and
Collin Spickerman. Those five are expected to start against Sacramento State... last season the Vikings had 10 different starting lineups in 29 games with 10 different players earning starts.
STEPPING INTO A STARTING ROLE: SO F
Isaiah Pineiro began the season as the Vikings' key player off the bench. But he has played so well that Head coach

DONIVINE IS DIVINE: GR G
Donivine Stewart has a good handle on things this year. In 22 minutes per game at point guard, the SIUE transfer has committed only six turnovers. He has moved into the starting lineup the past three games.

Calaen Robinson has alternated between playing the point and shooting guard this season as Coach
Tyler Geving looks for the right fit. Robinson ranks fourth on the team in scoring (10.4) and first in assists (3.8) and three-point field goals (25).
