BOISE, Idaho — The Portland State men's tennis team wrapped up its portion of the Dar Walter Boise State Fall Classic Saturday, as seniors
Brent Wheeler and
Ian Risenhoover fell out of the singles and doubles back draws.
Wheeler and Risenhoover were both playing in the fourth round of the singles back draw Saturday, but both ran into trouble after having success in the back draw Friday.
Wheeler pulled out a match tiebreaker to advance past the third round on Friday, but had the tables turned on him Saturday as he lost his fourth round match in a match tiebreaker to Seattle's Ian Clare. Wheeler rallied to force the match tiebreaker against Clare, as he pulled out a tight second set, 7-5. Clare recovered by the time the match tiebreaker started, however, and beat Wheeler 10-4 in the breaker to win 6-3, 5-7, 10-4.
Risenhoover, meanwhile, tried to fight through an injury in his fourth round match against Abilene Christian's Hunter Holman, but was forced to retire after the first set. Risenhoover's injury also meant Wheeler and Risenhoover had to withdraw from the doubles back draw, where they were supposed to play Tom Witteveen and Jacob Schoenherr of Montana in the quarterfinals.
The Vikings will next play at the ITA Northwest Regional, which will be Oct. 22-26 in Seattle, Wash.
