BOISE, Idaho — The Portland State men's tennis team's newcomers led the way as the team opened its fall schedule Thursday with the first day of the Dar Walters Boise State Fall Classic, hosted by Boise State University.
Scott Goldner, a post-graduate transfer from the University of Oregon, got things in his first match for the Vikings as he beat Lewis-Clark State's Sonam Phuntsok 6-3, 6-1 in the round of 64 to advance in the singles draw Friday. Meanwhile, Goldner's fellow newcomer,
Nathan Boniel, an NCCAA first-team All-American last year at Cambellsville University, swept past his opponent in the round of 64, beating Jacob Schoenherr of Big Sky-rival Montana, 6-0, 6-0.
With their wins, both Goldner and Boniel advanced to the round of 32, which will get underway tomorrow. Boniel, the 19th seed in the singles draw, will open the day for the Vikings with his round of 32 match against third-seeded Romai Ugarte of Utah State at 9 a.m. The 10th-seeded Goldner, meanwhile, will face Bjorn Scheepbouwer of Big Sky-rival Idaho State in the round of 32 at 10:30 a.m. If either or both Boniel and Goldner win in the round of 32, then they'll play in the round of 16 three hours after the start of their first match of the day Friday.
