DAY ONE RECAP

SEATTLE, Wash. —
The Portland State track and field teams picked up three new Big Sky qualifying marks, and bettered another, as the Vikings closed competition at the UW Invitational Saturday at Dempsey Indoor.

Sophomore CeCelia Jackson hit the Big Sky qualifying mark in the 60-meter hurdles with a seasonal-best time of 8.65 seconds in the prelims of the event Saturday. Jackson's time moves her up to second in the Big Sky behind teammate Jazmin Ratcliff in the 60-meter hurdles. Ratcliff and Jackson also finished 1-2 in the 100-meter hurdles at the Big Sky outdoor meet last season.

Junior Rockwell Tufty also hit the Big Sky qualifying mark in the high jump with a two-inch personal best in the event Saturday. Tufty, the school record holder in the outdoor high jump, cleared 6-08.75 (2.05m) on his first attempt at the height, putting him within half an inch of the school record of 6-09.25 (2.06m), set by former NCAA All-American Nick Trubachik in 2009. Tufty followed with three attempts at what would have been a school-record height of 6-10.75 (2.10m), but couldn't quite clear the mark.

Sophomore Whitney Diggs hit the Big Sky-qualifying mark with a seasonal-best time in the women's 400 meters as well, as she placed fourth overall in the 400 in 56.11 seconds. Diggs, who set the school record in the women's indoor 400 as a freshman last season, beat her 2015 seasonal best by .75 seconds with her time Saturday, and would have moved up to third in the Big Sky with her time in the event going into the weekend.

Senior Jasmine Woods, meanwhile, moved into the Big Sky lead in the 60 meters, as she finished the prelims of the event in 7.51 seconds Saturday, moving her past teammate Genna Settle, who tied her conference-leading time going into the weekend with her time of 7.56 seconds in the prelims.

Woods then followed it up with a 7.52-second performance in the finals, placing her second overall in the event.

Woods now ranks fifth all-time in the indoor 60 meters at Portland State after her performances Saturday.

Outside of those four, 15 other Vikings tied or set new personal bests Saturday, starting with freshman Ta'mara Richey, who crushed her old personal best in the 60 meters during the qualifying heats Saturday. Richey finished the 60 meters in 7.82 seconds, a full tenth of a second faster than her old best of 7.92.

Senior Nettie Wayne also set a new personal best in the qualifying heats of the 60 meters, as she finished in 7.89 seconds, while freshman Spenser Schmidt tied his personal best in the qualifying rounds of the men's 60 meters, as he crossed the line in 7.02 seconds.

The Vikings also had three athletes set new personal bests between the men's or women's 400 meters, starting with sophomore Roazena Miller, who finished the women's 400 in 59.57 seconds, a tenth of a second faster than her old personal best of 59.67.

Freshman Hunter Pfefferkorn, meanwhile, shattered his personal best in the men's 400 meters, beating his old time by half a second with his finish in 49.83 seconds. Pfefferkorn's time moves him up to ninth all-time in the event at Portland State, one spot behind teammate Mitchell Gable, who broke his own personal best in the event with his time of 49.74 seconds.

Outside of the sprints, several of the Vikings' distance crew set new personal best Saturday, including four athletes in the men's 800 meters alone. Junior Spencer Russell, sophomore Nathan Fleck, sophomore Ben Richardson and junior Neil Seibert all set new personal bests in the men's 800 meters Saturday, starting with Russell, who finished the event in 1:54.10. Behind him, Fleck beat his old PR with a time of 1:54.65 Saturday, while Richardson beat his old PR with his time of 1:55.11. Seibert posted the biggest improvement of any of the four, however, as he finished the 800 in 1:57.48, more than three seconds better than his old best of 2:00.60, set at the same meet last season.

Russell, Fleck and Richardson all would have ranked in the top 12 of the Big Sky in the 800 meters entering the weekend with their times Saturday, while Russell would have ranked in the top five of the conference.

Sophomore Cheryn Trapp, meanwhile, set a new personal best with her time of 5:03.33 in the women's indoor mile. Trapp's time moves her up to seventh all-time in the event, and would have ranked her 10th in the Big Sky going into the weekend.

Freshman Gwyneth McMorris also set a new personal best with her time of 2:19.22 in the 800 meters.

Three athletes also set new personal bests in field events, starting with junior Sydney Johnson, who set a new personal best in the shot put with her throw of 41-08.00 (12.70m).

Juniors D'nara Jones and Major Oni also each set news personal bests in the women's and men's triple jump, respectively. Jones jumped 36-10.25 (11.23m) to set her new personal best while placing 15th overall on the women's side of the event. Oni, meanwhile, recorded his first official mark in the triple jump as a Viking, placing ninth in the event with a jump of 41-07.00 (12.67m).

The Vikings will next travel to the Boston area, where part of the team will compete Feb. 6 at the Crimson Elite Meet in Cambridge, Mass., while the rest of the Vikings will compete Feb. 7 at the Scarlet & White Invitational in Boston, Mass.
