DAY ONE RESULTS
SEATTLE, Wash. — Junior
Amanda Boman and the Viking men's distance medley relay team each set school records Friday, as the Viking track and field teams opened competition at the first day of the UW Invitational Friday at Dempsey Indoor.
Â
Boman broke the record in the women's 5,000 meters, crossing the line in 17:01.73 to narrowly edge
Camelia Mayfield's school record of 17:02.49, set at the same meet last season. Mayfield's time was over 40 seconds faster than the No. 2 time in the 5,000 meters at the time she set it, leaving Boman and Mayfield well ahead of the pack in the event.
Â
Additionally, Boman's time in the 5,000 cross qualifies her for the Big Sky meet in both the 3,000 and 5,000 meters, and would also have ranked her tied for 38th in the nation going into the weekend.
Â
Meanwhile, sophomores
Ben Richardson and
Nathan Fleck, and juniors
Neil Seibert and
T-Roy Brown, broke the school record in the men's distance medley relay with their time of 10:05.11. The team's time breaks a near-10 year old record in the event by over five seconds, as the previous record was set at 10:10.74 in 2005.
Â
The team's time also beats the Big Sky-leading time in the event going into the weekend, and would have ranked them 28th in the nation.
Â
Besides the record breakers, the rest of the Vikings' distance crew also set strong performances Friday, starting with sophomore
Maggie Coleman, who set a new personal best in the 5,000 meters, as she crossed the line in 17:45.28. Coleman joins Boman, Mayfield and fellow sophomore
Cheryn Trapp as the only women in Portland State history to break 18 minutes in the indoor 5,000 meters, and now ranks fourth all-time in the 5,000 meters.
Â
The Vikings' women's distance medley relay team also set the No. 2 time at Portland State in the event, as freshmen
Gwyneth McMorris and
Nyalual Beng, junior
Kris Tollefson and senior
Keikoanne Hollins finished seventh overall in the event in 12:13.26. Additionally, like the men's team, the Vikings' women's team beat the Big Sky-leading time in the event going into the weekend, surpassing the 12:16.86 the team from Northern Colorado ran two weekends ago.
Â
Senior
Andrew Landstrom also moved up to third all-time in the men's 5,000 meters, as he finished in 15:12.29 Friday.
Â
Outside of the distances, junior
Sheldon Prince set a seasonal best in the 200 meters with his time of 22.11 seconds. Sophomore
Whitney Diggs also made her 2015 debut in the women's 200 meters Friday, and crossed the line in 25.46 seconds.
Â
Additionally, freshman
Haley Bell made her Portland State debut in the weight throw, and placed 23rd in the event with a throw of 37-00.50 (11.29m). Junior
Major Oni also set a new personal best in the men's weight throw for the second straight week, this time recording a mark of 48-06.25 (14.79m). Oni already ranked second all-time in the weight throw going into the meet, but moved closer to the school record of 55-04.25 (16.87m), set in 2003 by Jim Webster, with his throw Friday.
Â
Competition continues at the UW Invitational Saturday, with field events starting at 10 a.m. (PT).
