ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Sophomore Genna Settle moved into the Big Sky lead in the 60 and 200 meters Saturday, as the Portland State track and field teams set or bettered seven Big Sky qualifying marks at the Lobo Collegiate Invitational at the Albuquerque Convention Center.
 
Settle lowered her time in the 60 meters to 7.54 seconds (7.56 after altitude conversion), down from the 7.63 seconds she ran at the UW Indoor Preview last Saturday. Settle also made a strong 2015 debut in the 200 meters, as she moved into the Big Sky lead in the event with her time of 24.60 seconds (24.67 after altitude conversion) Saturday, a time that also qualifies her for the Big Sky meet.
 
Settle's time in the 60 meters moves her into a tie for fifth all-time at Portland State, while her time in the 200 meters moves her into sole possession of fifth place in the event.
 
Senior Jasmine Woods also moved up to 10th all-time in the 60 meters Saturday, as she lowered her Big Sky qualifying time from last week to 7.62 seconds (7.64 after altitude conversion), ranking her tied for third in the Big Sky in the event.
 
Senior Jazmin Ratclif, meanwhile, stretched her lead in the 60-meter hurdles while winning the event Saturday. Ratcliff crossed the line first in 8.42 seconds (8.44 after altitude converstion) Saturday, a full tenth of a second faster than the 8.52 seconds she ran at the UW Indoor Preview last weekend. Ratcliff now leads the Big Sky by .23 seconds, after opening the season with a .15-second lead last week.
 
Additionally, Ratcliff moved up to 31st nationally in the 60-meter hurdles, moving her closer to the top 16 in the nation, which is where she'll need to be to assure herself of qualifying for the national meet in the event.
 
The Vikings also had three athletes qualify for the Big Sky meet in the long jump between their men's and women's teams. Sophomore Baileh Simms and freshman Ta'mara Richey qualified for the Vikings on the women's side, with Simms, the defending Big Sky outdoor champion in the long jump, making her 2015 indoor debut at the meet. Simms jumped 19-00.00 (5.79m) in the long jump Saturday, moving her up to second in the Big Sky in the event after her first meet of the season. Richey also made her 2015 debut in the indoor long jump, and just passed the qualifying threshold, hitting the Big Sky mark by .01 meters with her jump of 18-05.00 (5.61m).
 
Meanwhile, freshman Spenser Schmidt, who was just .02 meters short of the Big Sky qualifying mark last week, cleared it easily Saturday, as he set a new indoor personal best with a jump of 22-10.50 (6.97m). Schmidt now ranks third in the Big Sky in the event, and leads the nearest freshman in the conference by over a foot. Additionally, Schmidt now ranks fourth all-time in the long jump at Portland State, moving up from seventh after his jump last week.
 
Outside of the Big Sky qualifiers, seven other Vikings set new personal bests at the meet Saturday, while five other athletes made their PSU debuts in new events. The sprints had the most new personal bests, with eight athletes setting new standards for themselves between the 60 and 400 meters.
 
Junior Adia White and senior Nettie Wayne each set new personal bests in the 60 meters, as White shaved .03 seconds off her old personal best with her time of 7.80 seconds Saturday, while Wayne broke eight seconds for the first time in the event, as she crossed the line in 7.95 seconds. Richey also debuted in the 60 meters Saturday, finishing in 7.92 seconds.
 
Sophomore Sierra Arlauskas also made her 200-meter debut Saturday, and finished in 25.33 seconds.
 
On the men's side, four athletes either set or debuted new personal bests in the 200 meters, led by Schmidt and fellow freshman Hunter Pfefferkorn, who each recorded times of 22.48 seconds Saturday. Cole Nixon, Schmidt and Pfefferkorn's freshman classmate, also made his 200-meter debut at Portland State Saturday, and crossed the line in 22.97 seconds. Additionally, sophomore Mitchell Gable set a new personal best in the event, finishing in 22.59 seconds, almost a quarter of a second faster than his old personal best of 22.83 seconds.
 
Nixon also set a new personal best in the 400 meters Saturday, as he crossed the line in 50.90 seconds.
 
Meanwhile, in the field, junior Tyson Stipic followed up his PR in the high jump last week with another PR in the event Saturday. Stipic cleared 6-05.00 (1.96m) in the high jump Saturday, giving him sole possession of sixth place all-time in the event at Portland State.
 
In the throws, junior Sydney Johnson set a new personal best in the shot put by close to four inches, recording a mark of 40-07.75 (12.39m).
 
Junior Major Oni also set a new personal best by over three inches in the men's weight throw, throwing 48-04.00 (14.73m) Saturday.
 
The Vikings will next compete at the UW Invitational Friday and Saturday, Jan. 30-31, at Dempsey Indoor in Seattle, Wash.
