DAY ONE RECAPÂ |Â DAY TWO RECAP
CORVALLIS, Ore. — Junior
Matt Pronesti and the Viking doubles team of senior
Stuart Tierney and junior
Ian Risenhoover led the Portland State men's tennis team to a title sweep Sunday at the Corvallis Indoor Tennis Championships at Timberhill Tennis Club.
Â
The Viking men's tennis program had never swept the singles and doubles titles at a tournament in its history before Sunday, while Pronesti's singles title marks just the second singles title in program history and the first since Mitch Somach won the Corvallis City Championships in the fall of 2011.
Â
Tierney and Risenhoover's win in doubles also marks the second doubles title in four tournaments for the Vikings during their 2014-15 season, after Pronesti and junior
Wil Cochrane won the second flight doubles title at the PNW Intercollegiates in November.
Â
"This was a great tournament for the team to get our spring season started," PSU head coach
Toby Krauel said.
Â
Pronesti started the day off strong for the Vikings in claiming the singles title in the morning. Four players remained in the singles draw at the start of the day, with Pronesti, junior
Brent Wheeler and sophomore
Ethan Lopez occupying three of the four spots for the Vikings.
Â
Pronesti, the sixth seed in the singles draw, made quick work of his teammate, Lopez, in the first semifinal match, as he cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 win to advance to the final.
Â
The fifth-seeded Wheeler, meanwhile, faced unseeded Spencer Watanabe of George Fox in the other semifinal, and got into a hole early as Watanabe sprinted out to a one-set lead with a 6-1 win in the first. Wheeler bounced back well in the second set, however, playing even with Watanabe until breaking late to take the set, 7-5. Wheeler then completed the comeback with a tight, third-set win, giving the Vikings an all-PSU final opposite Pronesti with a 1-6, 7-5, 6-4 win over Watanabe.
Â
Wheeler's comeback win left him drained going into the final, however, and the junior ceded the singles title to his teammate, Pronesti.
Â
The onus then fell on Tierney and Risenhoover to complete the title sweep for the Vikings, as they faced the tournament's top-seeded doubles team of Andrew Pritchard and Pannhara Mam in the doubles final.
Â
Tierney and Risenhoover took an early lead in the title match, as they won the first set, 6-3. Mam and Pritchard turned things around quickly in the match, however, beating Tierney and Risenhoover 6-2 in the second set, and then taking a quick 4-0 lead in the match tiebreaker. Tierney and Risenhoover dug deep after that, though, winning 10 of the final 13 points of the match to claim the title with a 6-3, 2-6, 10-7 win.
Â
"Ian and Stuart showed great heart in coming back in the match tiebreaker," Krauel said. "They rallied behind Ian's big serves and Stuart's exceptional volleys."
Â
The Vikings will now look to take their title sweep into the rest of their 2015 dual season schedule. The Vikings host their first home match of the 2015 dual season Saturday, when they host Lewis-Clark State at 4 p.m. at Club Green Meadows in Vancouver, Wash.
