SEATTLE, Wash. —
Senior Jazmin Ratcliff led a group of four sprinters that hit Big Sky qualifying marks Saturday, as the Portland State track and field teams opened their 2015 indoor season at the UW Indoor Preview at Dempsey Indoor.

Ratcliff got her season off to a good start, as she placed third among a talented field in the finals of the 60-meter hurdles Saturday in a Big Sky-qualifying time of 8.52 seconds. Ratcliff's time beats her mark from the same meet last season, putting her ahead of her 2014 pace, when she placed second at the Big Sky meet and broke the school record in the event.

Junior Sheldon Prince, the defending Big Sky champion and school record holder in the indoor 400 meters, also had a strong debut Saturday in his strongest event, as he placed sixth in the 400 meters in a Big Sky-qualifying time of 48.62 seconds.

Sophomore Genna Settle and senior Jasmine Woods, meanwhile, hit Big Sky qualifying marks in the 60 meters in the preliminary rounds of the event. Settle clocked in at 7.63 seconds in the 60 prelims, while Woods set a new personal best with her time of 7.65 seconds.

Settle and Woods also set new personal bests in their other events Saturday, with Settle setting a new best in the indoor long jump, while Woods set a new personal best in the 200 meters. Settle set her long jump mark while winning her flight of the event with a jump of 17-08.75 (5.40m) on her first attempt of the day, more than six inches better than her previous personal best. Woods, meanwhile, set her mark in the 200 at 25.00 seconds while finishing eighth in a field stacked with competitors from the Pac-12.

Besides those four, the day also featured strong debuts for several Viking newcomers, including a pair of strong performances from freshman Spenser Schmidt. Schmidt made an impressive debut in the long jump, posting a mark of 22-07.00 (6.88m) on his second jump of the day. Schmidt's jump already ranks him sixth all-time in the long jump at Portland State after only one meet as a Vikings, and put him within an inch of hitting the Big Sky qualifying mark in the event.

Schmidt also ran 7.02 in the prelims of the 60 meters Saturday, moving him up to ninth all-time in the event at Portland State.

Freshmen Ta'mara Richey and Akayla Anderson also moved into the top 10 all-time in the women's triple jump and 60-meter hurdles, respectively, as they made their debuts Saturday. Richey moved up to 10th all-time at Portland State in the triple jump with a mark of 37-02.25 (11.33m) Saturday. Anderson, meanwhile, had the top qualifying time in the 60-meter hurdles, and upped her time to 8.81 seconds in the preliminary rounds, a time that already ranks her eighth all-time at Portland State.

Additionally, junior Amanda Boman, a newcomer among the Vikings' distance runners, moved up to fourth all-time in the women's 3,000 meters, as she ran the distance in 9:53.33, almost 45 seconds faster than her personal best in the outdoor 3,000 meters.

Boman and senior Keikoanne Hollins also each set new personal bests in the indoor mile, as Boman won her section of the event in 5:03.90, while Hollins crossed the line in 5:07.07, more than nine seconds better than her previous personal best, set last season.

Sophomore Nathan Fleck set a new personal best in the men's indoor mile as well, crossing the line in 4:20.71, close to seven seconds faster than his previous best from last season.

Senior Nettie Wayne also set new personal bests in the qualifying heats for the 60 meters, crossing the line in 8.00 seconds, while junior Tyson Stipic set a new personal best in the high jump, clearing 6-04.75 (1.95m) to beat his old PR by two inches.

The Vikings will next compete at the Lobo Open on Jan. 24. The University of New Mexico will host the meet in Albuquerque, N.M.
