SEATTLE, Wash. —
The Portland State men's tennis team faced a stiff test in its 2015 opener Saturday, falling 7-0 to No. 64 Washington at the Nordstrom Tennis Center.

The Huskies (1-0) swept the six singles matches from the Vikings (0-1), and took two of three doubles matches to secure the doubles point.

"We knew this was going to be a tough early season test for us going in," PSU head coach Toby Krauel said. "Still, Ethan [Lopez] and Brent [Wheeler] gave us a great win at No. 3 doubles, and Stuart [Tierney] lost a close match against Washington's No. 1 singles player."

Lopez and Wheeler won their match at No. 3 doubles in a tiebreaker, beating Washington's Rishabh Raman and Wendell Watanabe 9-7 in the breaker to win 7-6 (7).

The Huskies had already secured the doubles point by the time Lopez and Wheeler gutted out their win, however, as Washington won the matches at No. 1 and 2 doubles by identical 6-3 scores. Emmett Egger and Jeff Hawke, the second-ranked doubles team in the ITA Northwest region and 39th-ranked team in the nation, beat the Vikings' Tierney and Ian Risenhoover at the top spot, while Viktor Farkas and Gal Hakak beat the Vikings' Wil Cochrane and Matt Pronesti at No. 2 doubles.

Meanwhile, in singles, Tierney gave Egger, the 11th-ranked singles player in the ITA Northwest region heading in the match, a run for his money at No. 1 singles, before Egger pulled out a couple of tight sets to beat Tierney 6-4, 6-4.

The rest of the singles matches went more smoothly for the Huskies, as they only dropped seven games to the Vikings in the matches played on lines two through six. Farkas won the first singles match of the dual for the Huskies, as he swept past Risenhoover 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5 singles. After that, Mitch Stewart, ranked second in the northwest and 78th in the nation in singles, beat the Vikings' Lopez 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2, before Douglas closed out a 6-0, 6-2 win over Cochrane at No. 4.

Douglas' win closed out the dual for the Huskies, but they still went on to beat the Vikings in the three remaining singles matches. Hakak beat the Vikings' Wheeler 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 singles, while Joao Barra beat Pronesti 6-2, 6-1 at No. 6 singles.

Tierney and Egger's match then close out the dual between the two teams.

Next up, the Vikings step out of the dual format for a tournament in Corvallis, Ore., which will run from Saturday, Jan. 17, to Monday, Jan. 19.
