BOISE, Idaho — Returning to action after a two-week break, the Portland State women's tennis team fell 7-0 in a deceptively competitive match against Boise State Saturday at the Appleton Tennis Center.
The Vikings (5-6) held leads in several matches, but couldn't pull out a win against the Broncos (12-8).
"Everybody's match was a winnable match, and that's the good news" PSU head coach
Jay Sterling said. "Every single girl on our team feels like they could have won, and that's good from a competitive standpoint. On paper it wasn't close, but all the matches were long."
Junior No. 1
Dané Vorster was one victim of a tough finish in her match against Boise State's Sandy Vo at No. 1 singles Saturday. Vorster held a 5-2 lead and a set point in the first set against Vo, but lost the lead and a first-set tiebreaker as part of a 7-6 (4), 6-1 loss.
"I started off really well," Vorster said. "At 5-2, I just started wanting to play better than just good, and didn't focus on the little things like first serve percentage, which cost me."
Freshman
Sabina-Elena Preda also held an early lead in her match against Boise State's Teal Vosburgh at No. 3, but eventually lost 6-4, 6-4 in what proved to be the longest match of the dual.
Junior
Megan Govi played another long match against Boise State's Megan LaLone at No. 4, but lost 6-2, 6-2.
"It was just a few points here and there today," Govi said. "As a team, we're driven to use this as motivation in our matches going forward.
Outside of Vorster, Preda and Govi, senior
Marina Todd lost 6-1, 6-1 to Boise State's Anissa Bryant-Swift at No. 2, while junior
Alexa McDonald and sophomore
Ayaka Terakawa lost 6-0, 6-0 and 6-1, 6-1, respectively, to Boise State's Morgan Basil and Sammie Watson at No. 5 and 6.
Meanwhile, in doubles, Bryant-Swift and Vosburgh beat Todd and Preda 8-2 at No. 2, while Basil and Watson beat McDonald and Terakawa 8-1 at No. 3. LaLone and Vo were leading in their match against Vorster and Govi at No. 1, as well, when the match was called after the Broncos sealed up the doubles point.
The Vikings will have a quick opportunity for redemption, as they play The College of Idaho in a neutral-site match in Boise Sunday, April 6.
"The bright side of today's match is we had the ball on our racket a lot of times," Sterling said. "We just need to learn how to finish, and we'll get a chance to prove that tomorrow."
The Vikings' match against the Yotes will start at 10 a.m. (MT).
