Track Teams Set or Lower Six Big Sky Qualifying Marks at Willamette Invitational

RESULTS

SALEM, Ore. —
The Portland State men's and women's track and field teams set or lowered six Big Sky qualifying marks Saturday at the Willamette Invitational at the Charles Bowles Track.

Senior Sarah Dean led the Vikings' group of Big Sky qualifiers Saturday, as she won the women's 800 meters by over two and a half seconds. Dean crossed the line in 2:10.61, a time that would have led the conference by nearly three full seconds going into the weekend. Dean's time also set a new personal best for the senior, and moves her to fifth all-time in the event at Portland State.

Dean qualified for the Big Sky meet in the 1,500 meters as well, as she placed third in 4:32.87. Dean's time would have ranked her second in the Big Sky going into the weekend, and would rank her tied for 77th in the nation as well.

Additionally, Dean's win in the women's 800 meters was one of four event wins for the PSU women Saturday, with two of the other three coming from the Vikings' throws crew. Senior Allison Burkett qualified for the Big Sky meet in the javelin while winning the event with a throw of 135-06.25 (41.30m). Burkett's throw would have ranked her fifth in the conference going into the weekend. Sophomore Sydney Johnson also won the discus Saturday while improving her Big Sky-qualifying mark in the event with a throw of 142-07.25 (43.46m).

Freshman Roazena Miller won the fourth event for the Viking women, as she placed first in the women's 400 meters in 1:00.47.

Junior Jasmine Woods, meanwhile, qualified for the Big Sky Outdoor meet while placing second in 12.06 seconds in the 100 meters Saturday. Woods' time shattered her old personal best by more than two-tenths of a second, and would have ranked her fourth in the Big Sky in the 100 meters going into the weekend.

Sophomore Rockwell Tufty improved his Big Sky qualifying mark in the high jump from a week ago as well, as he placed second in the event with a jump of 6-07.75 (2.03m).

Outside of the Vikings' Big Sky qualifiers, several athletes set new personal bests at the meet Saturday.

Juniors Erica Contos and Keikoanne Hollins set new personal bests in the 800 meters with their times of 2:17.82 and 2:25.89, respectively.

Contos also set a huge personal best in the 1,500 meters, as she placed second in 4:49.42, nearly 35 seconds faster than her old personal best of 5:24.24, set at the 2012 Oregon Preview. Hollins beat her old personal best in the 1,500 meters as well, finishing in 4:53.79 to edge her old best of 4:56.16, set at the 2013 Pacific Twilight.

Junior Jake Schwartz set a new personal best in the men's 1,500 meters, meanwhile, running 4:17.28 Saturday, more than seven and a half seconds faster than his old best of 4:24.98, which he set at the Mondo Mid-Major Challenge last season.

Additionally, for the second straight week, sophomores Christian Wood and Tyson Stipic set new personal bests in the 400 meters and triple jump, respectively. Wood beat his time at last week's Oregon Preview while placing fourth in the 400 in 50.05 seconds, while Stipic cleared his mark in the triple jump at the Oregon Preview with a jump of 44-01.25 (13.44m).

Senior Nevin Lewis also beat the 15.98 seconds he ran in the 110-meter hurdles at the Oregon Preview, as he crossed the line in 15.79 seconds Saturday.

The Portland State track and field teams return to action next weekend, as they travel to Stanford, Calif., Friday and Saturday, April 4-5, for the Stanford Invitational.
