Illness Weakens Viks as Women’s Tennis Falls to Boise State, 7-0

BOISE, Idaho – With a roster that was depleted of depth due to illness, the Portland State Vikings fell to Boise State, 7-0 on Thursday afternoon. Unable to field a full lineup due to a flu bug that effected Kelsey Frey and Marti Pellicano, the Viks went 0-3 in doubles and 0-6 in singles (with a doubles and singles forfeit) to fall to 10-10 overall on the year.

Despite the lineup adversity the Viks came out with fire in doubles as both teams broke their opponent in the opening frame. Despite the set win in the No. 1 team of Nayanatara Vadali and Mandy Mallen struggled to continue the momentum, yielding the next three games. The Broncos team of Marlena and Manuela Pietzuch continued to pour on the pressure and eventually defeated the Viking duo, 8-2.

With the forfeited doubles match, the Broncos took the doubles point but the No. 2 team of Megan Govi and Marina Todd, controlled play early on in their match from the No. 2 spot. The Viking tandem jumped out to a 3-0 lead to start and extended it to 4-1 the next changeover. The team of Morgan Basil and Teal Vosburgh fought back to even the match at 6-6 and took the next game after that, pushing it to 7-6. Todd and Govi didn't relent, taking the next game to advance the match to a seven-point tiebreaker. After falling behind in the tiebreaker, Govi and Todd once again fought back scoring four-straight to push it to 6-5, however the Broncos earned the necessary point to clinch the match and seal the 3-0 doubles play victory.
I
n singles action the shorthanded Viks attempted to comeback from the 2-0 (one forfeited singles match and the doubles point) deficit.

Manuela Pietzuch was the first Bronco to earn a singles victory as she defeated Vadali, 6-0, 6-2 from the No. 5 spot.
Vosburgh was next as she battled through hard fought first set with Todd from the No. 2 spot but took control in the second, winning 6-3, 6-0, to clinch the dual for Boise State.

Several other matches finished simultaneously as Alexa McDonald fell at the No. 4 position, losing to Megan Lalone, in straight sets by identical 6-1 scores, while Govi also was defeated in a tough 6-3, 6-3 match at the No. 3 spot against Basil.

In the final match to conclude, Mallen looked to have the first set well in hand with an early lead but Marlena Pietzuch fought to make it 4-3 and eventually win the set, 7-5. She didn't look back from there working to a 6-1 second set victory and capping the
Broncos, 7-0 win over the Vikings.

Portland State will conclude its “spring break” road trip tomorrow morning when the team takes on Lewis-Clark State in Boise, Idaho. The match is slated for 10 a.m., MT.
