Portland State Women’s Tennis Falls to Northern Arizona, 7-0

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – The Portland State women's tennis team (8-9, 2-5) failed close out its three-match road swing with a victory on Sunday as the team fell, 7-0, to host Northern Arizona in Flagstaff, Ariz. With the loss Portland State falls to 8-9 overall and 2-5 in the Big Sky.

It was a tale of two matches for Portland State when it came to playing in the highest altitude in the Big Sky, as the team looked well-adjusted against Valparaiso on Saturday while the opposite could be said about the Viks' performance on Sunday.

The Lumberjacks opened up the match taking all three doubles matches in convincing fashion.

Alice Pacaut and Malia Wahinepio handled the Portland State team of Kelsey Frey and Megan Govi to the tune of 8-2 to earn the first doubles win.

Next to fall for the Viks was Marina Todd and Nayanatara Vadli who were defeated by the Northern Arizona tandem of Hannah Stone and Johanna Vang.

At the No. 2 spot Mandy Mallen and Marti Pellicano suffered the same fate, yielding the win to Ghizelene Doballah and Nicole Perez, 8-3.

With the doubles sweep Northern Arizona entered singles action with a 1-0 lead.

Stone added to the Lumberjacks lead defeating Mandy Mallen in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0.

Pellicano who recorded her 10th win of the season yesterday failed to improve upon that mark from the No. 5 spot with a 6-2, 6-0 loss to Pacaut, pushing NAU's lead to 3-0.

The match was clinched for the Lumberjacks on court No. 2 as Todd was downed 6-2, 6-2 by Doballah, giving Northern Arizona the necessary four points.

With the dual decided the 'Jacks continued to rack up the wins as Perez defeated Alexa McDonald, 6-0, 6-3, while Kelsey Frey was handed the loss by Vang, 6-3, 6-3. Govi followed suit shortly thereafter as Wahinepio gave the sophomore a 6-3, 6-1 defeat.

Portland State will be back in action following exam week traveling to Phoenix Arizona and playing Mesa Community College, Arizona Christian as well as traveling to Boise Idaho to take on Boise State during the team's spring break trip.
