Portland State Women’s Tennis Heads Out on First Big Sky Road Trip

OPENING SERVE
The Portland State women's tennis team takes to the road for the first time in conference play heading to Pocatello, Idaho for a Saturday match against Idaho State, and Ogden, Utah for a Sunday match against Weber State. Match times are slated for 10 a.m. MST and 9 a.m. MST, respectively.

LAST TIME OUT
The Viks hosted the Bobcats last Saturday at Club Green Meadows for their first Big Sky contest of 2013. The squad won a thrilling doubles point which came down to a deciding match with the team of Megan Govi and Marina Todd. The Viks tandem downed Ellie Crum an d Iva Parapunova, 9-7, this after the Viking duo held a 7-0 lead in the match. Portland State didn't keep the momentum going however as the Viks lost four of the six singles contests to drop the match 4-3. Megan Govi and Alexa McDonald were the only Vikings to record singles victories.

SCOUTING IDAHO STATE
The Bengals enter the weekend having not recorded a win in its dual season with a 0-6, 0-1 mark. Like the Viks, the Bengals were downed in their Big Sky home opener as Idaho State fell to the Eastern Washington Eagles 5-2. The Bengals have struggled in singles play having gone, 5-31 so far in dual season and are winless in doubles having gone 0-13. Likewise the team has fallen to squads the Viks hold wins over in Seattle and Idaho. Idaho State lost to Seattle 5-2 on Feb. 1, while they got swept by the Vandals, 7-0, on Feb. 11. Idaho State holds the series edge against Portland State, having gone 4-3 against the Viks.

SCOUTING WEBER STATE
The Weber State Wildcats play host to Portland State this weekend and sit at 2-7 overall and 1-1 in conference. The Wildcats split last weekend, defeating Colorado Mesa, 6-1 and falling to Eastern Washington, 7-0. The Wildcats are 5-6 in singles play but 6-2 in doubles in their two conference matches. Annika Karlsen has been the most productive Weber State player, maintaining a 4-5 singles mark, having gone 4-3 from the No. 6 spot.  The Weber State tandem of Kristi Elmer and Thais Kurer have played from the No. 1 spot and have had mixed results with a 3-6 record.

LETS GOVI!
Megan Govi has had a stellar 2012-13 campaign, following a terrific fall season, with a record of 7-2 through the dual slate. Govi has provided production from the bottom half of the lineup having gone 2-0 from the No. 4 spot, 2-1 from the No 5 position, and 3-1 from No. 6. Govi is currently on a three-match winning streak.

GOING STREAKING
Alexa McDonald and Megan Govi currently are tied for the team lead as far as the longest winning streak. Both McDonald and Govi have won three-straight singles matches. The two were the only members of the Viks to win in singles play against Montana State last weekend.

DEPTH CHARGE
The No. 3-6 spots have been the engine motoring the Viks this year as the spots have seen a majority of the production. The bottom portion of the lineup has accounted for a 24-16 record. Players having played in the No. 6 spot have gone a near flawless 8-2.

TEAM WORK
The tandem of Marti Pellicano and Mandy Mallen has been a bright spot for a Vikings squad that has had a mixed bag as far as doubles is concerned. Pellicano and Mallen have gone 5-2 through the dual season thus far. The duo is most recently coming off a match where they breezed through the Montana State team of Liana Bates and Wena Tsan, 8-1.
