PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland State women's tennis team (5-4, 0-0) recorded their fourth and fifth wins of the season in the same day, as the squad downed Lewis & Clark College, 6-1, in a morning road match, and returned home to defeat George Fox, 7-0, to complete the weekend sweep.
PSU first traveled to the Lewis & Clark campus for an early morning match with the Pioneers.
The Viks came out firing on all cylinders in doubles play as the No. 1 team of Daria Burobina and
Kelsey Frey dominated Aurora Garrison and Isabelle Borris to the tune of 8-0, to give the Viks a 1-0 lead.
Mandy Mallen and Marty Pellicano followed suit with an 8-1 win over Lisa Osepyan and Claudia Lew, 8-1 to clinch the doubles point.
In the No. 3 spot
Marina Todd and
Megan Govi made quick work of Olivia Cornell and Gillian Lowe, 8-2 to complete the sweep.
With the doubles point no longer in doubt the Viks rolled through singles play earning wins at every position except No. 2 as Govi made quick work in the No. 5 spot, defeating Osepyan 6-0, 6-0, while Pellicano and Frey also had strong performances from the No. 4 and No. 3 spots, respectively.
Mallen played from the No. 1 spot and took down Garrison, 6-3, 6-2, while
Alexa McDonald's win at the No. 6 spot against Borris, 6-1, 6-0, helped PSU secure the 6-1 victory.
In the evening match against George Fox the results were very similar.
In doubles play Burobina and Frey shook off a rocky start, fighting back from a 2-0 deficit to finish the match with an 8-3 victory.
Pellicano and Mallen were next to record a doubles win, downing Krsita Rey and Alyssa Emoto, 8-2.
Mcdonald and
Nayanatara Vadali completed the doubles dominance from the No. 3 spot defeating Bethany Nguyen and Aleassa Wren, 8-1 and securing the doubles point for the Viks.
In singles play Portland State handled the Bruins begining with the No. 1 spot as Mallen didn't allow a single point against, defeating Molly Beaumont, 6-0, 6-0.
Pellicano earned her second win of the day downing Shaina Inn, 6-1, 6-2, with
Marina Todd, getting on the board with a victory from No. 2 spot, defeating Emoto, 6-3, 6-0.
With the match clinched, the Viks didn't let up as
Megan Govi continued her streak of consistency defeating Rey, 6-0, 6-0, while McDonald won at the No. 5 spot, 6-1, 6-1 and Vadali completed the clean sweep with a 6-0, 6-1, victory from the No. 6 position.
The Viks now embark into their conference schedule next weekend, when the squad hosts Montana State at Club Green Meadows, in Vancouver, Wash., next Saturday. The match time is slated for 1 p.m.
