THE OPENING TIP
With a four-game winning streak in tow, the Portland State men's basketball team goes on the road this Friday to take on perhaps its toughest non-conference opponent of the season in Boise State. The Vikings (4-1) and Broncos (4-0) will meet in a 5 p.m. PT game at Taco Bell Arena in Boise.

Portland State comes off a successful weekend, winning all three games in its own tournament against teams from three different Division I conferences, including 67-63 over Loyola Chicago (Missouri Valley), 77-74 over Southern Illinois Edwardsville (Ohio Valley) and 79-63 over UC Davis (Big West).

Portland State is now on a four-game winning streak, its longest streak since a four-gamer Feb. 23-Mar. 3, 2012. It's early and schedules are not comparable, but Portland State opens this week with the best record of any Big Sky Conference school at 4-1.

The Vikings will try to break a long road losing streak against a formidable opponent. Boise State begins this week at 4-0 with a game against Idaho on Wednesday prior to facing the Vikings. The Broncos are 31st among those receiving votes in the national rankings.

The Vikings lost at UNLV in the season opener on Nov. 8. That marked the 17th straight road loss for PSU, dating back more than a season.

Friday's game at Boise State will be live-streamed on the internet at www.broncosports.com. A live audio stream is available at www.GoViks.com.

PSU's game at Boise State is one of only two non-conference road games this season. The Vikings come home for three straight home games in December, beginning with the University of Portland on Dec. 7.

BOISE STATE BRONCOS: Boise State was 21-11 last season and reached the NCAA Tournament, losing a first-round game to LaSalle.... all five starters and nine letterwinners return from that team... the Broncos are  4-0 on the season, lead the nation in scoring at 103.0 points per game and rank third in three-point field goals made (11.8). The Broncos have wins over Texas Arlington (116-87), Simpson (110-53), Seattle (86-68) and New Orleans (100-80)... forward Anthony Drmic leads the Broncos in scoring at 24.8 points per game... guard Jeff Elorriaga leads the nation in three-pointers per game (6.0), ranks second in three-point percentage (.667) and averages 21.7 points per game... Boise State shoots .523 as a team, .465 from three-point range.

THE ALL-TIME SERIES: The teams have played 23 times previously, with Boise State holding a 13-10 lead. The Broncos have won four of the last five meetings and have an 11-2 advantage in Boise... Viking Coach Tyler Geving is 0-1 all-time against the Broncos... Bronco Coach Leon Rice has never faced the Vikings.

VIKINGS VS. THE MOUNTAIN WEST: Portland State is 19-44 all-time against current members of the Mountain West Conference, including a 67-48 loss at UNLV on Nov. 8... Tyler Geving is 0-2 against MWC schools.

TOURNAMENT SWEEP: Portland State had an excellent weekend, winning all three games it played in its home tournament. SUSTAINABLE AND RECYCLABLE QUICK NOTES

WINNING LINES
• Portland State is 4-1 this season, 4-0 at home, 0-1 on the road.
• PSU has won 16 of 22 at home dating to the 2011-12 season.
• The Vikings have lost their last 17 road games dating to the 2011-12 season.

Stott Stuff
• Since the start of the 2006-07 season, PSU is 77-23 at home, including 43-19 in Big Sky Conference regular season and tournament games.
• PSU has gone 133-47 in 180 games at the Stott Center since the 1996-97 season. Including home games at Memorial Coliseum (12-6) and the Rose Garden (19-9), the Vikings are 164-62 at home over the past 18 seasons.
• Portland State has lost only four non-conference home games since the start of the 2006-07 season (34-4). PSU is 21-4 against Division I schools, and 13-0 against lower division schools over that span.

HOT SHOTS:
• JR G Tim Douglas had 18 assists and only three turnovers in the three wins.
• JR C Brandon Cataldo is shooting .667 from the field (10-15) and 1.000 at the line (3-3).
• JR G Andre Winston Jr. is shooting .636 from the field (14-22) and .857 at the line (18-21)
• Portland State has held opponents to 62.0 points per game and .413 shooting.

NOT SO HOT:
• Portland State was 0-14 on the road in 2012-13, is 0-1 this year, and has lost 17 straight road games overall.

GOOD STARTS: New point guard Tim Douglas is expected to make a big impact for the Vikings this season. So far, he has not disappointed, averaging team-highs of 15.4 points, 4.5 assists and 1.6 steals... Douglas has led the Vikings in scoring in three games and assists in four games. He has scored in double figures in all five games.

MOORE, MOORE, MOORE: SR F Aaron Moore is the top returning Viking after leading PSU in scoring and rebounding last season. Despite a slow start to this season due to back issues, Moore has returned to form. He averaged 16.0 points and 8.3 rebounds while shooting .543 from the field and .909 at the line in the three wins last weekend... Moore matched his career-high of 20 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in Friday's win over Loyola. It was his eighth career double-double... for the year he averages 12.5 points and 6.5 rebounds.

OUR COUSIN VINNIE: If you remember the "Microwave", former Detroit Piston sixth-man Vinnie Johnson, then know that Portland State appears to have their own version in JR G DaShaun Wiggins. In three tournament games, Wiggins came off the bench to average 13.3 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.7 assists in just 20 minutes per contest. His big game was a 21-point, seven-rebound, three-assist, two-steal performance in Sunday's win over UC Davis... Wiggins is third on the team in scoring this season at 12.4 points per game.

@BALLHANDLING: Portland State's handle has been pretty good this season, averaging only 11.6 turnovers per game. In the three-game tournament, the Vikings had less than 10 mistakes in each game, averaging just 8.7 while forcing 13.7 per game... for the season, the Vikings have a +3.8 turnover ratio.

LET'S GET SMALL: Portland State Head Coach Tyler Geving has a wealth of talent at the guard position. As a result, he has frequently had three and four guards on the floor at a time. It has worked out well as he has had great production from JR Gs Tim Douglas, Andre Winston Jr., DaShaun Wiggins, FR G Zach Gengler, and now JR G Gary Winston. A guard-heavy lineup has mandated that SR G Marcus Hall has had to play the "4" spot frequently. Hall is a strong defender and has handled that role well. In addition, all of the Viking guards have proven to be good rebounders, helping PSU to a +2.4 rebounding ratio this season... Portland State has held opponents to 62.0 points per game and .413 shooting.

THE MONKEY ON THEIR BACKS: Portland State opened its season with a road loss at UNLV. That marked the 17th straight road loss for the Vikings dating back to the 2011-12 season. PSU shot only .331 from the field and made 20 turnovers at UNLV. The good news is PSU plays seven of nine preseason games at home.

TASTY TIDBITS:
• Portland State came back from double-digit, second-half deficits to beat both Loyola and SIUE. The win over UC Davis was a little more conventional as the Vikings went wire-to-wire, leading by double-digits throughout the second half.
• When Portland State went 0-7 from three-point range against UNLV in the season opener (11/9) it marked the first time in PSU history that a Viking team failed to make a three in a game. Since 1996-97 when basketball was reinstated on the Park Blocks, PSU had made at least one three-pointer in 495 straight games. Fortunately, the Vikings came back to make 26 three-pointers over the last four games.
• The crowd of 13,148 at UNLV was the ninth-largest ever for a game in which the Portland State program has played.
• Portland State is 14-4 in home opening games since joining the Big Sky Conference in 1996-97.
• Portland State plays 17 regular season home games this year, the most ever scheduled in a single season.
• They are both from the state of Washington, had All-State credentials on their respective high school teams, and share the same last name. But JR Gs Gary Winston and Andre Winston Jr. are not related - it's just a happy coincidence.
• JR G Sebastian Suarez will redshirt this season due to complications with his transfer status. He needs to establish a year of residency and will be eligible to compete in the 2014-15 season.
• The Viking basketball program has graduated 16 of 17 players who have completed their eligibility under Head Coach Tyler Geving.
• Portland State is in its 18th season as a member of the Big Sky Conference and Division I. PSU played basketball from 1946-1981 before discontinuing the program. Basketball was reinstated for the 1996-97 season.
• Speaking of tasty, Portland State basketball fans will have the opportunity to Get Stuffed this winter at the Stott Center. Any fan purchasing a ticket for a seat at the Peter W. Stott Center will receive free concessions. That's right, all the food you can eat from the concession stand. Portland State students, with student tickets, will also take advantage of this promotion. It's just that simple. Buy your ticket and you eat for free.  To get your tickets, call the Portland State box office at (503) 725-3307 or go to www.GoViks.com.
• And just for the heck of it, Kobayashi ate 12 hot dogs in 88 seconds at Portland State's game against Loyola on Nov. 22.

SEASON HIGHLIGHT REEL
• Portland State made 15 straight field goals to open the second half in a 79-43 win over Pacific Lutheran (11/13). The Vikings did not have a miss until 3:15 remained in the game and outscored the Lutes, 47-20, in the second half. PSU shot 53% from the field in the game. JR G Tim Douglas led four Vikings in double figures with 16 points.

• SR F Aaron Moore led a come-from-behind win over Loyola (11/22), 67-63, by tieing his career-high of 20 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. JR G Andre Winston Jr. added 16 points as the Viking erased a 17-point second-half deficit.

• For the second game in a row, PSU came from double-digits down in the second half to earn a win. The Vikings beat Southern Illinois Edwardsville, 77-74 (11/23). JR G Tim Douglas scored 18 points to lead the Vikings while JR G DaShaun Wiggins added 17 points off the bench.

• JR G DaShaun Wiggins had a Viking season high of 21 points in a 79-63 victory over UC Davis (11/24). Wiggins added seven rebounds, three assists and two steals in just 21 minutes. It marked PSU's fourth win in a row - its longest winning streak since the 2011-12 season.
