LIVE STATS vs. OREGON
Last Time Out
The Portland State Vikings women's tennis team is coming off one of its most successful weekend home stands in school history, going 3-0 against Seattle, Linfield and Idaho and looking impressive in the process. On Saturday the Viks battled to a 4-3 decision, with the match coming down to
Megan Govi's court from the No. 6 spot, with Govi prevailing, 6-3, 6-4. On Saturday the Viks rolled to a 6-1 victory over Linfield while Portland State saved its grittiest performance for Sunday, downing a team that it hadn't defeated before under head coach
Jay Sterling, upsetting Idaho, 5-2.
Scouting The Ducks
No. 69 Oregon is 2-0 after making easy work of Eastern Washington (6-1) and Idaho (7-0) last weekend. The Ducks feature five players that are undefeated in singles so far this season as Lana Buttner, Sofia Hager, Nicole Long, Julia Metzger and Patricia Skowronski all started the year 2-0. The Ducks also have only suffered one loss in doubles play going 4-1 so far in 2013.
Scouting the Bulldogs
Gonzaga opens up its season this weekend at Oregon in Eugene, Ore., where they play the Ducks on Friday and Air Force on Saturday, and finish up with Portland State on Sunday. The Bulldogs sport a young roster with only four upperclassmen of the 12 players. Freshman sensation from 2012, Kylie Peek returns to the lineup after recording her first 10-win season last year. She joins senior Britta Stime who also went 10-7 last season. Senior Prue Teitzel is back for one final year after playing primarily in the No. 1 spot in 2012.
She's Honored
Freshman
Kelsey Frey did something on Monday that no other Viking had done since 2008, as she was named Big Sky Player of the Week. Frey, who was coming off a 5-1 weekend after going undefeated in singles play, 3-0, and 2-1 in doubles, helped spark PSU to one of its best starts in program history. The last Viking to win a player of the week award was Lacey Pflibsen. Frey is only the fifth player in Viking history to earn the honor.
She Must Be Butter, 'Cus She's On A Roll
Sophomore
Megan Govi looked impressive in the fall campaign and its clear she hasn't lost a step since starting the dual season. Govi is currently the only Viking undefeated right now at 3-0. Govi has won a singles contest in every match she's competed in, taking one against then, No. 32, Washington State, Seattle and Linfield. She is also 2-2 in doubles play so far in 2013.
Depth Charge
Portland State has been bolstered by its roster additions in 2013, as junior Daria Burobina, sophomore
Mandy Mallen and freshman
Kelsey Frey have not only given the Viks more threats in their lineup but its given the team ample depth. Evidence of that comes in the form of its record in the bottom three spots in their lineup. The Viks are 13-3 in singles play from the No. 3 through No. 6 spots. Likewise Portland State has three players who are on winning streaks of two matches are more.
Megan Govi, and Frey are on three-match winning streaks, while
Marti Pellicano is on a two-match run.
