VANCOUVER, Wash.
– The Portland State women's tennis team picked up their first Big Sky Conference victory of the season Friday afternoon by a score of 4-3 over Weber State at Club Green Meadows in Vancouver, Wash.

For just the fourth time this season, the Vikings (4-14 overall, 1-6 Big Sky) took the doubles point, winning two of the three matches, which proved to be the pivotal point in the dual. The Vikings dropped the No. 3 singles match, 8-5, before Megan Govi and Marina Todd won the No. 2 doubles match by a score of 8-6.

With the two teams splitting the first two doubles matches, it came down to Ashley Spencer and Marti Pellicano at the No. 1 doubles line for the Vikings. They got up early in the match but then battled with the Wildcats (1-21, 1-6) and took the match 9-7 securing the doubles point for the Vikings.

With the Vikings taking a 1-0 dual lead going into singles play, things were looking up. In all three of the previous wins for the Vikings they took the doubles point.

Spencer lost 6-2 and 6-1 to start singles play bringing the dual score even at 1-1. Marti Pellicano took the first set of her No. 3 singles match 7-5. She then dropped the first game of the second set before rattling off six straight points to take the second set, and the match, 6-1 giving the Vikings a 2-1 lead.

Alexa McDondald then fell at the No. 1 singles line but played well losing both sets by scores of 7-5. With the dual tied at 2-2, Govi took her No. 4 singles match in three sets.

Govi won the first set 6-2 but then dropped the second set 6-3 allowing the Wildcats to force a decisive third set. It was a back and forth third set but Govi took the set 7-5 putting the Vikings one singles victory away from their first conference win of the season with two matches to finish.

Govi is now 8-10 on the season and is 4-3 in Big Sky play. Her eight wins on the season are the most on the team and she has now won her last three matches. She is 4-1 since being moved to the No. 4 singles line.

Todd secured the dual win for the Vikings with her straight sets win at the No. 5 singles line. She won by scores of 6-4 and 6-3 picking up her fifth win of the season and is 5-5 in her last 10 matches.

Nayanatara Vadali finished out the dual for the Vikings and fell in straight sets 6-3 and 6-4.

The Vikings now have one dual left in the season as they play host to Northern Arizona on Saturday at Club Green Meadows at 1 p.m. PDT. The Portland State men's tennis team will also be taking on the Lumberjacks of Northern Arizona at 1 p.m. at Club Green Meadows. It's the only time this season where both men and women's squads are on the court at the same time.
