Vikings Look to Break Through in Big Sky Play against Eagles

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland State women's tennis team returns home for a Big Sky Conference dual with Eastern Washington University this Friday at Club Green Meadows in Vancouver, Wash. The dual is slated to start 9 a.m. PT.

The Vikings (2-9 overall, 0-4 Big Sky Conference) are coming off of a disappointing loss last week at the hands of cross-town rival Portland by a score of 5-2.

The Vikings dropped the doubles point two matches to one, but won two singles matches and took two more to a decisive third set. Alexa McDonald played her best tennis of the year dispatching her opponent at the No. 4 line by scores of 6-3 and 6-1.

Marina Todd fought to the very end to pick up her match win. She dropped the first set 6-4 but then battled back and won the second set 7-5. She then won a match tiebreaker 10-4 to take the match.

Portland State welcomes Eastern Washington on Friday which comes into play this weekend with a 1-6 overall record and is 0-1 in conference . The Eagles started the season on a six dual losing streak but picked up their first win of the season on Feb. 24 when they defeated Lewis-Clark State College by a score of 6-1.

The Eagles are 11-31 (.262) as a team in singles matches this season and 4-17 (.190) in doubles play. They lost their only Big Sky Conference match of the season, 6-1, to Northern Colorado in Cheney, Wash. on Feb. 5. Freshman Moira Hedberg is the only Eagle with a winning record this season (4-3) going 3-3 as the No. 1 and 1-0 as the No. 2 singles player. She earned the Eagles their lone point against Northern Colorado.

Following this Friday's dual against Eastern Washington, the Vikings will host Linfield at Club Green Meadows for a 12 p.m. dual on March 18.
