PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland State women's tennis team heads to Colorado for a non-conference match with Colorado State on Saturday, March 31 at 9 a.m. PDT after which they head to Greeley, Colo. for a Big Sky Conference showdown with Northern Colorado on Sunday at 10 a.m. Both duals are tentatively scheduled as outdoor duals, weather permitting.
The Vikings (3-11 overall, 0-5 BSC) have had 11 days off since they were last on the courts in competition after recording their third team win of the season, 4-3 over Linfield at Club Green Meadows in Vancouver, Wash. The Vikings took the doubles point by sweeping the Wildcats in doubles play and are 3-0 as a team when they do so.
Heading to singles play with a 1-0 dual lead, the Vikings would need only three singles victories to secure the dual win.
Marina Todd and
Megan Govi made quick work of their matches winning in straight sets giving the Vikings a 3-0 lead, but that is where things would get interesting.
Marti Pellicano battled through three sets but would fall at the No. 2 singles line as would Audrey Farr at the No. 1 singles line brining the dual to 3-2 in favor of the Vikings.
Alexa McDonald, playing as the Vikings' No. 3, won the first set of her match 6-3 but then fell quickly in the second set, 6-1 to allow a decisive third set. She then found her rhythm again and took the third set, 6-3, to secure the dual victory for the Vikings.
Nayanatara Vadali then fell in a third set match tiebreaker 13-11 after dropping the first set and wining the second bringing the final score to 4-3.
The Vikings now head to Fort Collins, Colo. to take on the Rams of Colorado State, the alma mater of new Portland State assistant coach Emily Wagner. The Rams are 3-10 overall on the season having dropped eight of their last nine contests. They are 19-59 (.271) in singles play and 8-31 (.258) in doubles play this season. The Rams are a combined 1-25 at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions.
After a stop at Colorado State, the Vikings head to Greeley to take on Big Sky opponent Northern Colorado. The Bears come into the weekend 6-5 overall and 3-1 in conference action. They play host to Metro State on Saturday before taking on the Vikings on Sunday.
The Bears are 34-32 (.515) in singles play and 22-11 (.667) in doubles play. Stephanie Catlin (8-3), Chrissie Hoolahan (7-3) and Elizabeth Tapia (7-4) all have winning records on the season for the Bears.
Northern Colorado has only used three doubles duos the entire season and is 9-2 at the No. 1, 8-3 at the No. 2 and 5-6 at the No. 3 doubles lines.
Following this weekend in Colorado, the Vikings head to Seattle, Wash. for an April 7 date with Seattle University before returning home for their final weekend of the season. They host Weber State at 10 a.m. on April 13 and then share the courts with the Portland State men's tennis team for a double-dual against Northern Arizona starting at 1 p.m. at Club Green Meadows.
