POCATELLO, Idaho –The Portland State women's tennis team fell in a tough loss at Idaho State Saturday afternoon in Pocatello, Idaho. The Vandals defeated the Vikings by a score of 4-3 as the Vikings missed a golden opportunity to break through into the win column in Big Sky Conference Play.
Audrey Farr and
Alexa McDonald started the day off well for the Vikings with a doubles win by a score of 8-4. The other two Vikings doubles duos did not put up much of a fight and lost 8-3 and 8-0 to give the Bengals the doubles point moving into doubles play.
There were only four courts available so the first four lines of moved into singles play. All four Vikings took early first set leads and looked like they had bounced back from a disappointing showing in doubles play.
Farr made quick work of her match at No. 1 for the Vikings and won by scores of 6-0 and 6-3 for her first singles win of her Portland State career.
Megan Govi then won her second singles match of the season at No. 3 for the Vikings by scores of 6-1 and 6-4. The two singles wins gave the Vikings a 2-1 dual lead with four matches to be played.
After leading early, senior
Marti Pellicano fell on a streak of bad luck and dropped the first set by a score of 6-3. She then dropped the second set by a score of 6-2 allowing the Bengals to tie the dual at 2-2.
McDonald also had an early lead in the first set but could not capitalize and dropped the first set by a score of 6-4. She battled in the second set but droppe it as well falling 7-5 giving the Bengals a 3-2 lead.
The Bengals (2-2, 1-0) then secured the dual win when
Marina Todd, playing as the No. 5, lost in straight sets 6-3 and 6-2.
Nayanatara Vadali picked up a win at No. 6 for the Vikings when, after winning the first set 7-5, her opponent retired due to injury.
The Vikings now head to Bozeman, Mont. next Friday and Saturday for a neutral site dual with Montana State – Billings and Montana State respectively. The Vikings head into their final 10 duals of the season, five in non-conference play and five in conference play.
