VANCOUVER, Wash. - The Portland State women's tennis team returned to action Sunday morning after a months break from action to take on Gonzaga at Club Green Meadows. Senior
Yuki Sugiyama earned the Vikings lone point in the match as the team fell, 6-1. Sugiyama picked up her 10th win of the season.
Sugiyama battled to three sets in the contest winning the first and falling in the second with scores of 6-1, 4-6. After starting the third set in a 2-1 deficit, the Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan native rallied back to take the set and the match with a 6-3 score.
The win by Sugiyama over Gonzaga gives the phenom her 10th win of the year and a 10-2 record overall. She's the first PSU tennis player to reach the double-digit win mark since Leinani McAneney accomplished the feat in 1998.
McAneney finished the season with a record of 12-5 to earn first team All-Big Sky honors. Sugiyama has six matches remaining in the season to surpass the win total, thought to be the most wins by a PSU women's player.
The Vikings return to action next Friday and Sunday to take on SeattleU and Washington State. the SeattleU contest will be at Club Green Meadows at 3 p.m., while the WSU contest will be played in Pullman, Wash.
