Women's Tennis Returns to Action Sunday Against Gonzaga

PORTLAND, Ore.
- After a months hiatus from competition, the Portland State women's tennis team will be back in action Sunday March 27 to take on Gonzaga at Club Green Meadows at 9 a.m. The Vikings will look to build a win streak, having won its last contest Feb. 25 against Northern Colorado, 4-3.

PSU's last win was a keystone match for the Vikings, as it was their first Big Sky Conference victory since March 29, 2009, a 6-1 triumph over Idaho State. After sweeping the doubles point to gain the early 1-0 advantage, Yuki Sugiyama and Anya Dalkin earned victories to tie the match 3-3 with only No. 4 Marti Pellicano remaining.

Pellicano faced UNC's Lexi Filliol and battled three sets with the Bear. After taking the first 6-4, she dropped the second set to Filliol, 6-3, and quickly trailed in the third, but rallied back to a 7-5 victory to clinch the match for the Vikings.

Heading into the Gonzaga match, the Vikings sit in sixth-place in the conference standings, with a 1-3 record and are 4-7 on the season.

Sugiyama remains the Vikings ace with a 8-2 record at No. 1, including a 3-1 register in conference matches. In fact she is the one of the top players in the Big Sky this season, carrying the highest-winning percentage among No. 1 players with a minimum of four matches played.

In doubles, Dalkin and the Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan native are 7-4 and are amongst the conference's top duo in win totals, only trailing Montana's Rebecca Bran and Whitney Paluch by one victory.

Gonzaga is coming off a spring break trip from Hawai'i, that saw the Bulldogs finish with an 1-3 record and two wins over Linfield and SeattleU at the conclusion of the trip. Overall, the team sits 5-9 that includes an eight match winless streak. Against Big Sky foes, the Zags are 1-3 with their only win over Eastern Washington and losses to Montana (twice) and Montana State.

No. 1 Rika Mehndiratta is 5-7 this duel season and tied for third in the teams overall win total. Sophie Lantta and Clare Dodge, the Bulldogs No. 4 and No. 6 respectively, are atop the team's win total with six triumphs.

Portland State will follow up April 1 with a contest against SeattleU at Club Green Meadows, scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
