complete game notes in pdf

Portland State begins its 2010-11 campaign at home for the first time since the 2002-03 season, hosting the Pepperdine Waves in a non-conference game at the Stott Center this Friday. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. The game is available on Freedom 970 AM and www.970.am beginning with a 6:30 pregame show.

The last time PSU opened at home - some eight seasons ago - the Vikings came away with a win, roaring back from a 20-point first-half deficit to beat Cal State Northridge, 69-65, behind the tutelage of former coach Heath Schroyer. The Vikings hope for a win in more conventional fashion this time as Head Coach Tyler Geving's team opens a 30-game, 15-home game slate.

The 15-game home schedule is the most ever played for the Viking program. It has been matched four other years in PSU history, most recently in 2006-07.

PSU won an exhibition last game last Friday, beating Division III Linfield, 119-74. Six players scored in double figures in that one, led by 24 points, six assists and four steals from Melvin Jones. Pepperdine won its preseason exhibition last Friday with a 79-51 decision over Laverne.

The Vikings are coming off a 13-19 season. They finished 7-9 and in sixth place in the Big Sky Conference, reaching the Big Sky Tournament semifinals. Three starters and eight letterwinners return from that team.

Pepperdine was 7-24 last year, compiling a 3-11 record in the West Coast Conference. The Waves return all five starters and 13 letterwinners from that team.

Portland State won a Dec. 13 meeting between the teams in Malibu, 93-81, as Phil Nelson hit 8-12 three-point field goals and scored a career-high 28 points.

A QUICK LOOK AT THE 2010-11 VIKINGS
Senior forward Phil Nelson (6-8, 12.9 ppg, 48 3-pt FG), along with senior guard Melvin Jones (5-10, 11.8 ppg, 81 3-pt FG) and senior forward Paul Guede (6-5, 4.9 ppg, 3.0 rpg) will lead the Vikings into the 2010-11 campaign. Nelson has fully recovered from a broken foot that ended his season after 20 games last year. Jones has proven to be one of the best long-range shooters in the Big Sky Conference (42%) and Guede provides a much-needed defensive stopper for the Vikings.

Sophomore guard Chris Harriel (6-4, 3.9 ppg) should make a big jump in productivity this year for the Vikings. He led the Vikings in scoring in two of three games during their preseason trip to the Bahamas.

Also returning are seniors Phillip “Tree” Thomas (6-8, 3.1 ppg), Alonzo Brandon (6-1, 2.7 ppg), junior Dane Johnson (1.9 ppg) and sophomore Kenton Bansemer.

Redshirt junior Nate Lozeau (6-10) should also have a big impact after sitting out last year due to NCAA transfer rules.

Among the newcomers are three players who should be key contributors right away. Junior forward Chehales Tapscott (6-5) was the NWAACC South Division Player of the Year last season at Clackamas Community College. He averaged 25.5 points and 13.5 rebounds per game in leading his team to a second straight NWAACC title.

At point guard, Geving signed junior Terry Coleman (5-11) out of Sullivan Community College in New York. Coleman was an All-Conference and All-Region player while averaging 14.1 points, 6.9 assists and 7.6 rebounds per game.

Charles Odum, a junior from College of Southern Idaho, averaged 11.9 points last year and will bring strong perimeter defense to the team.

Another signee, Brandon Cataldo (6-10) from Rainier High School, should have a good future in the program. Coming off a broken leg his senior season, Cataldo will work to improve his conditioning and skills.

Junior transfer Michael Harthun (6-3) comes to PSU from Washington State where he played two seasons. Harthun will haver to sit out this season due to NCAA transfer rules.

Also redshirting is JC walk-on guard Brandon Hawkins (6-1), formerly of Fresno City College.

EXHIBITION REWIND: VIKINGS 119, LINFIELD 74
After leading the Big Sky Conference in scoring last season, the Portland State Vikings picked up where they left off in March, routing Linfield 119-74 in a preseason exhibition game on Nov. 5. The Vikings were lights out from all over the court, hitting .522 from the field, and making 15 three-pointers in the game. PSU also converted 32-42 at the line... SR G Melvin Jones led the Vikings with 24 points, making 8-10 shots, 4-6 from three point range and 4-4 at the line. He also had six assists and three steals in 23 minutes of play... Chris Harriel scored 17 points and Phil Nelson added 16 for the Vikings as six scored in double figures... 17 steals by the Vikings fueled 26 fast break points and PSU scored 39 points off Linfield turnovers... JR C Nate Lozeau scored 12 points on 6-7 shooting and had four rebounds in his first start for the Vikings. JR F Chehales Tapscott, also making his first start, had nine points and seven rebounds... Tree Thomas scored 15 points for the Vikings and Charles Odum had 11 with four assists and three steals.

The Vikings led the Big Sky Conference in scoring in season (78.0) and Big Sky games (80.7). Portland State averaged 87.8 points when it won, winning only twice without scoring at least 84 points.
