Vikings Top San Diego Behind Saldana Goal, Earn First Win over WCC Team since 2019

Every single game the Portland State women's soccer team has played this season, the first team to score has won the game. That streak held true on Sunday at Griswold Stadium, as the Vikings defeated the San Diego Toreros with a 1-0 win in PSU's last non-conference match.

In seven of nine games played this season, the first goal came within the first 25 minutes of the match. In this one, it was a stalemate for nearly 45 minutes. Both teams came out swinging, with San Diego putting up 7 shots to Portland State's 6. Then, at 43:28, Aliayha Saldana scored a one-touch finish for the Vikings (2-7-0) off a combination pass from Kendel Johnson and Grace Sarabia. 

The Toreros (3-4-2) entered the second half with a vengeance – they were leading in shots (9-7), and they wanted an equalizer, badly. However, the Vikings' defense was strong and swift, stopping all 11 shots San Diego sent their way in the second. Despite the Toreros' attempt to rally, possession was near even, with Portland State maintaining 49% to San Diego's 51%. 

Goalkeeper Finley Crabtree had herself a game, recording a career-high nine saves and her first career shutout. Just last week, she had tied her career-best of eight saves versus Boise State. 
With this win, the Vikings beat a West Coast Conference team for the first time in seven years, going back to a 1-0 victory over Pacific (Calif.) on Sep. 22, 2019.

The Vikings enter conference play with their next game, Thursday, Oct. 1, at Utah Tech, at 6 p.m. PT.
