Despite hopes for an underdog win, the Portland State women's soccer team ceded to Boise State in a 4-0 loss Sunday at Hillsboro Stadium.
This season, the Vikings have had an unfortunate time coming back from early goals scored against them – being outscored 7-2 in the first 25 minutes of games this season – and that proved true in this game as well. Eleven minutes into the game, Boise State's Asia Lawyer sent the ball into the bottom left of the goal, assisted by goalkeeper Ava de Leest. Nearly eleven minutes later, Olivia Collins scored on a penalty kick, bringing the Broncos up 2-0.
Elle Frazier, who came in for Yammile Picon five minutes into the game, tried for the bottom left of the net halfway through the first half, but de Leest shut her down. Just a few minutes later, Mia Lane, assisted by Jillian Anderson, scored Boise State's third goal of the game in a quick play that Vikings goalkeeper Finley Crabtree was unable to stop.
The Vikings only managed three shots in the first half, compared to the Broncos' 13, and entered the second half of the game down 3-0. Twenty-five minutes in, Portland State received a yellow card for Unsporting; 10 seconds later, Jillian Anderson scored the Broncos' fourth of the game.
Boise State, who have only lost one game this season and currently lead their conference in goals-against average and shutout percentage, played a physical game that simply proved too much for the Vikings. The final shot count was 22-6 in the Broncos' favor.
The Vikings next take on San Diego on Sunday, Sep. 20, at 12 p.m., this time at Lewis & Clark College.
